Default surely something can be done (gearbox)

hi guys,

still got gearbox woes
(as have quite a few people on here judging by the number of posts about this)

my car is getting worse to get into second and first.

when i first got the car there was no issue what so ever.
now it is very very difficult to get the car in the second and first gear when going down the box (3rd to 2nd, 2nd to 1st)
its perfectly fine going up the box.

The girl friend had the car today and every time she had to slow down in traffic she had to come to a complete stop to put the car into 1st before setting off again.
not ideal and can be dangerous as the cars behind do not expect you to go from circa 15MPH to 0 when the traffic in front is moving away etc

i had the gear box oil checked the other week and a small amount of oil was required but this minor top up has made no difference

what could be so worn to stop the car getting into gear??
linkages?
syncro??

there is no crucnhing etc the car just will not go into gear - as if the gate will not open.
the box does get better as it warms up.

could it even be the clucth causing this effect???

car details

2003 STI with PPP,
done 47K miles

if anyone has got any advice it will be greatly appericated.

what oil is in the box,and at 47k i wouldnt imagine there is much life left in the clutch. i changed mine at 32k while having the syncros done on 5th and the clutch was nearly on the rivits, but it does depend what life its had but i imagine 50-60k tops in these cars. where does the clutch bite???

Thank you for you reply

not sure what oil is in the box apart from gearbox oil and that the levels are spot on.

the biting point of the clutch is still fine.
it was juddering a little a few weeks ago every time i set off but thats fixed its self now.

so do you reckon it could be a sign that the clutch is failing??
not had any slippage either.

Its a 6 speed box right?

Mine is the same, 3rd to 2nd is a pain in the ***** & I'm getting some serious grating/whine on over-run - although I will say there is no clunking or crunching when changing gear

sounds like yours is the syncro's

sounds daft but it really can help to replace the fluid in the box, and its cheap to try.
As long as its castrol syntrax you wont go wrong, takes about 40 mins to do.

cheers for the replys guys,

yes its the 6 speed box.

brake fluid was bleed and changed a week ago (assuming i'm not being completely thick and the the brake and clutch fulid are filled from the same header tank). this has made no difference.
not sure if any fluid was drained from the clutch tho.

cheers again guys

The brakes and clutch draw their fluid from different resevoirs.
Bleed the hydraulic clutch cylinder which is on the top of the gearbox underneath your TMIC. It's a two person job but you might find that this is all it takes. Its rare for first - second syncros to go on a six speed especially with only 47K on. Higher gears I can understand because people rest their hand on the gear **** which eventually wear the bushes on the selector forks.

You've got nothing to lose by atleast bleeding the clutch properly first. If your not confident enough take it to a decent garage it will only be an hours labour at most.

Let us know how you get on

hi guys,

sorry for not reporting back.

been very busy with work plus i've not driven the car very much.

I drove the car today for the first time in a week and a bit and you could 'feel' the gears engaging when going into second.
it really didn't feel right.
It didn't crunch into gear but you could feel it droping into gear. again once warm it was fine.....thats the only thing thats confussing me.

any how i spoke to the garage the other day and the prognosis was that sounds very much like the clutch is on it way out and they gave me a good quote to have a new cluch fitted. They are alsosaid they would give it a good look over first before going straight in and replacing the clutch just incase its not that.
So i've just got to get the money together and get it sorted.
i'll report back again once the car has been in the garage and i'm even poorer

cheers again guys

guys,

been a while but thought i would give everyone an update.

the car was off the road for three weeks but since then there have been some developments.

The car has had a new clutch and new oil in a bid to try and cure the issues.

Firstly the car gets into second ok now from cold both up and down the box and once warm its a flawless change. The oil change made the biggest change...in fact the clutch change didn't make any noticable difference apart from i didn't realise how stiff the old clutch was compared to the new clutch. but as soon as the oil was changed there was a massive difference.

The car still struggles to get into first for the first few miles unless completly stationary but then its fine after that.

so all in all a much better car to drive again.

I am considering getting the clutch fluid drained and replaced to see if i can get it absolutly perfect.

anyone else have a issue getting their STi into first whilst slowing down for the first ouple of miles?
