Has anyone tried an airbox around their induction kit ?

I got a chap at work to make one up, along with some ducting from the front brake duct intake.

Idea is that by keeping the hot air out and getting cold air in, the air should be denser.

Looks good mate, I have seen a lot of these in Jap car mags, I am in the process of "procuring" pipe ready for my attempt, at the moment I am looking at water spray for my FMIC so cold air box will have to wait.

Good luck, Moles Dad.

Hi Ken. :I made a reverse cone for my WRX Wagon so the only air it got was through the snorkle in the inner wing. (K+N Cone) Also diverted o/s brake duct. Considered it succesful especially in summer. Did many temp checks @ filter, ambient, under bonnet, etc.Have also found on my STi Ver6 Wagon that air just behind o/s h/light when on the move is often @ ambient or +1 to +2 c. e-mail your address if you want photos via snail mail or ring me 07860302020.

Yes out of aluminium, it has better thermodynamics which does not hold heat as much as steel.

Ken

that looks good mate

have you thought about changing the O/S vent in the bonnet to a scoop for added air flow to the filter??

Thumbs up

Submannz - It is made of aluminium, the workshop did have some titanium sheet lying around, so if this works I may change it for that.

Dave - Thought that the vent will help a thru flow of air, if both were feeding in maybe you would get stalled air that would heat back up.

Harvey, not wanting to put too much of a downer on the idea but I measured the temps as well. Once above 10MPH the outside and underbonnet temps were only 1 or 2 degs different. It didn't seem worth the effort.

Also worth noting that in wet weather you can get a lot of water in the inner wing, this could be sucked into the air filter and bang!

My one is also completely closed with two pipes feeding the air box.

Hi Floyd: On my 95 WRX the reverse cone made a difference with temps 2/4c over ambient. Prior to mod temp @ cone was 8/12c over amb. On this car (STi Ver 6) induction is different with pick-up from just behind o/s h/lt. Measurements there show air temp on the move @ amb +2/4c & in this weather even in standing traffic never above32c i.e. amb +20ish. Cost is not an issue. £3 for some pvc pipe about 9" dia. & couple of hours for 1st attempt. Water not an issue either as inner wing snorkle retained. Not the way to go on new car but worthwhile on previous IMHO. (MKX Version for current vehicle will incorporate positive air flow system.) CHEERS H.

Will be coming to a website near me soon, but to be honest if might be too specific to the car.

I.e Blitz induction kit, Pipercross adapter , intercooler water bottle and alarm in the front.

The orignal was made up in cardboard and then traced to the metal one.
