Lumpy idle - first signs of MAF failure?????
#1
Got a 00MY with usual suspect add-ons.
The last few months I`ve noticed that about 80% of the time I can feel a slight lumpyess at idle. Tacho is steady, but theres definately a slight mis-fire (or feels like). Drives fine, no check light.
Could it be the MAF showing the first signs of death, could it be a coil-pack/dodgey spark plug?
Any tips gratefully recieved!

James,
I could be wrong but I think if it was MAF related it wouldn't settle when idling. When the MAF Sensor was giving me trouble it was constantly up & down the revs when trying to idle. I took it out (it's a MY95) & gently cleaned it with contact cleaner & a cotton bud. It was quite dirty. After that the idle settled & is fine. That a few months ago & I intend to check it every few months after the difference it made.

Have you had its cambelt changed recently? A couple of teeth out and that can result in lump idle.
I had dodgy plugs and that resulted in hesitaion while accelerating and perfectly normal idle.

Car is nearly a year old so no changes of cam belts......drops into idle fine, drives fine, its just a very slight knocking / misfire@idle. I can feel it more through my leg against the door board than anywhere else?????????????????

JamesS,
I thought my MAF sensor on my MY99 Type-R was on its way out but now I'm not so sure. It runs fine but every now and then its gets a bit frisky at idle. I'm no expert on these engines but I think they are inherently gruff at idle anyway aren't they?
Cheers,
Craig.

keep em coming.....
Standard Dump Valve. However I do have a monster air filter, K&N cone(good for 600HP!!!), and an additional bonnet scoop feeding it (Ex Andy Tang), proper bell mouth on the cone...........
I noticed the mis-fire shortly after fitting the bonnet scoop...could be linked could be nothing to do with it!!
I could not feel any mis-fire going back a couple of months..........
I had thought that lots of rain + bonnet scoop feeding the Cone may equal dead MAF, but its survived so far (4months) unless this is the first sign........

James, FWIW, when my MAF went, I could only notice problems at idling. The engine just hunted/stalled sometimes. Fuelling at higher revs was OK, so I first doubted it was the MAF. But it turned out to be the MAF ...

oh, another thing, maybe 1 out of 5 hot starts it feels like the engine is missing on one cyclinder. Starts but sounds quite rough, with a lower than normal idle speed and goes when I blip the throttle for the first time......

You should check if it is the throttle posisition sensor.
My MY98 had strange idle and sometimes it also misfired (coldstart) when the TPS was bad. I changed it and since then I haven´t had any problems.

lumby,
I have a HKS Induction kit & it's a MY95 so just undid the clips, the mounting from the turret, disconnect the connector & take it all out. You can get at the sensor easily enough inside with a cotton bud & some contact cleaner. Gently does it & it'll remove the gunk. Re-fit & my idle problems were no longer.
Hope that helps.
Johny.
