Default How hard is it to rebuild a gearbox?

Not mine

But, how hard is it to strip a box and replace a broken part then reassemble?

They aint that hard to do if you have some commen sense, and know what your looking at.

Just remember to place the parts down in order and reassemble in the same order.

You may need some special tools, like a hydrolic puller

As above, if your not planning on doing bearings dont undo the diff bearing cups, that way the preload will be correct when re-assembling.

I built 1 out of 2 in a couple of nights.

Also you might want a workshop manual to help you see what comes off where & for rebuilding

I would price the bearings before you start taking things apart, you may find they are very expensive and as such its not cost effective to bother. I've been down that road before with other cars.....

I wouldnt of thought bearings would cot that much, even from subaru, its the gears and synchro assemblies that will prob cost the money

Just had a quote for rear diff bearings for a MY98 and they were £45 +vat each, so i wouldn't hold your hopes up to much on that one. i'm going to extract the bearings and visit my local bearing supplies to see if they can source the bearing for me.

Thats excatly what id do, altho if you compare £300 for a new gear to £45 for a bearing, its still not to expensive.

It's all gonna depend on which bearings you are going to need?

There are a couple of bearings at £27 in your box, but the rest range from £58 - £115 each
