When I had mine done, Zen informed me that PPG recommended the redline lightweight shock proof gear oil and so did they. Thats what they run in their time attack car so if its good enough for them then it'll do for me.

That is a competition based light oil that doesn't sap horsepower. Ok for cars that do short distances; I.E. time attack.

For a road car the story is different.

However, your choice of oils will be influenced by which diff(s) you are using.

I am talking about the type of LSD. If you are using standard WRX or STi LSDs then 75w90 fully synthetic is what you will use.

You are welcome to your opinion of course

We should agree to differ here perhaps. I'll stick with the oil I use which has friction modifiers in for my diffs, and Black Moly to protect my Dog rings, you carry on putting any old 75W90 in every gearbox

l do know just a few things about transmissions.

We don't just put any old etc etc. We choose to save our customers wasting their money on branded products, that are no better than another product at half [ or less ] the price.

We disagree, lets leave it there then.

As Millers Oils have some form of sponsorship with Zen, I had simply assumed their oils were in use.

Evening Harvey,

What would be suitable oil for a Quaife ATB front LSD in this case, ( PPG gearset in TY754 case ), I just got some Mobilube 1 SHC oil for mine to try and sort a gear shift crunch which the builders say is the syncro brake not working fast enough with the castrol oil they supplied / fitted .....

Thanks

V

We use a generic 75 W90 synthetic that we keep in bulk. For plated diffs that are set on high load we use Castrol LSD oil [ I forget its cataogue number, it used to be B373. [ Their brake fluid used to be GO-99 which suggests that someone had a sense-a-yuma ]

For low load plated diffs we just use the generic 75W90 synthetic. The additives in LSD oils for plated diffs are mostly to stop the creaking and groaning they make when on full lock.

Texaco used to do one that quietened even the tightest of plated LSD's.

No oil in the world is going to protect the clunk of a dog engaging with the next dog. Some sort of rubber might but the action of the dog is so positive that it just has to do it's own thing.

While we may continue to feature in Millers Oils adverts, we are not current in any sponsorship deal with them. That only came about as we settled on using their products in our race car nearly 3 years ago.
We stock a wide range of gear oils for a wide range of applications. Currently on the shelf we have 7 different types of gear oils, spread across 2 manufacturers, all suitable for one subaru application or other. So it's relatively easy to make a recomendation or a sale from our stock.

PPG do officially say they use redline shockproof.
One of the guys at PPG uses Martini oil in his dog box, but thats down to other factors, but it hasnt posed him a problem.

We are using Silkolene syn 5 in one of our Team PPG Dog boxes in Time Attack this year, 99% sure we also used that in our skylines dog box last year.

I have heard people say that the redline oil is a better choice for dog boxes, but I have never used it myself.
