Exclamation Intermittent whine

Last couple of days have noticed a whine at various speeds i.e from 10m.p.h through to 70m.p.h, various stages of acceleration, been through the history of clutch and drivetrain threads and nothing is quite the same. The only thing I can get to do at the same time is depress the clutch and it stops then returns at different intervals.

could this be

1) the clutch is wearing to a point of needing replacement.

2) any of the bearings in and around the gearbox and clutch failing?

3) gear box could be deteriorating and needs replacing?

Car is MY97 Wagon standard car with just wheels and STI back box.
Has 100,700miles

any help would be appreciated
Andy

A whine would usually refer to a hot/degrading bearing i think? Does the noise come from the front or rear? And it goes when you dip the clutch?

Its deceiving where its coming from the only indication i can give about it being clutch or gearbox symptom is that it stops when clutch is disengaged.

Cant see it being a wheel bearing as it not constant and clutch wouldnt stop this.

dunno about the dif whether the clutch would stop it when down as it wouldnt be loaded.

Get all four wheels off the ground on axle stands and run the car in gear. Use a stephescope on the gear casing and diff to see if you can hear it that way?? Sounds like a bearing of some sort!
