Just to re-iterate the OE boost control problems, especially on decat PPP'ed cars; after lots and lots of fiddling (I have a collection of 10 different sized restrictors + spares ) I found a very good match across winter temps which has been in for 2 months now.
Changed the backbox last night; Supersprint to Scoobysport (limited 'Quiet' edition, thanks Pete - finally!) and am getting overboost again.
I'm also going to fit the Dawes and ultimately dump the OE solenoid, but am taking it slow.....fitting lambda & knock leds in cupholder and hiding the attractive blackboxes first..will then learn 'as is' readings and start playing
Subaru's OE boost control is not up to the task - what do other manufacturers use?

I have always felt that from 99-V reg onwards, that there were alot of gutless cars around, although mostly noticed with MY00's.I used to think that the Euro's where the good ones, but have been told that Robertio's is a Euro.I now think that it may be that some cars were built in early 99 (T-reg time),stored and sold as later cars, this could be correct if they have the black or brown labelled ECU's that StephenDone mentions in another thread.the latest ECU is supposed to be the green label, which I am now wondering went in some late 99 built onwards cars.side by side all the cars would look the same, with the earlier built cars getting that MY's upgrades for the forecourt.this is only my theory though .
could people with MY99/00/01 classic shape post a few detials to see if there is a pattern.
my own car is a MY00 W-reg,with the seatbelt date 1999/11,green labelled AE802 ECU.I have always felt let down by it's performance compared to the earlier cars I have driven .
the only use for this thread is to try and see which ECU we need to try and source.

My last incarnation of S600BY S could never be described as gutless. And this was one of the first 99s (actually registered 12/98).
Look through the dyno pages and see what 99 owners achieve with an exhaust and filter. There are plenty of 99/00 cars that are over 260bhp on std electronics.

Mine was registered in January 2000 so there's a good chance it's got one of the '99 ECUs. Only thing is, I don't know where to look so's I can check it!
If someone can let me know I'll check later.
Btw, "Huggy" is nice and quick.

MY00 on a "Y" Plate...... has a Green AE802 ECU.
Looked last night and then proceeded to slash my finger on the side of the footrest. Doh.......
Will be interested in what changing around ECU's will be like, as the scooby feels quick to me, but its the only one I've had.
Hopefully will be trying this out with Stephen Done tomorrow on my car.

I have the green ae802 on my MY00. I just had a look. The funny thing is that when my friend, (who is a scoob tuner in OZ and has done heaps and heaps of tuning on all the models there), came here to Greece to trick mine up a bit, he drove mine before he did any thing to it and he said that my scoob felt quicker as standard than any of the standard scoobs he had driven in Australia.

Lift the carpet in the passenger footwell loosening a few plastic screw as you go. Underneath there is a (sharp edged) metal lid held on with 4 x 10mm bolts.
To be honest I thought mine was OK too on an 802 as well.

Continuing with my above post. I picked mine up from the Netherlands in June 2000 but it was built in December 99. How do I know this? From the Subaru CD at the dealers, which when you give your VIN number, it comes up and also the seatbelts have 12/99 stamped on the label.

thanks so far
ECU's under the carpet behind a plate in the passenger foot well, only takes 5mins to have a look at.all I did on mine was look under the glove box, just behind the door pillar and unscrewed the large plastic carpet clip, then picked out a trim clip on the door pillar and pealed the carpet back,10mm socket to remove the plate and you will see the ECU,no need to remove it as you will see the label.there is a date on the seatbelt which some say is a rough built date.
Pete C,
I am a fan of PAW figures on rolling roads so look at the Powerstation results more than the others.at our local 4x4r/r up here (Star performance,Scotland),they use the same set up as PS.,at one of the r/r days there were about 6 MY00's,all got 120-140bhp@ wheels bar one that got well over 150.these cars had different breathing mods agreed but some cars had the same mods as his.I have always found PAW consistent at Star even on different days.my fully decatted car + filter got 139bhp/wheels,this good MY00 same mods got 154/wheels (same day) and john banks MY00 PPP decatted MBC@ 1.2 bar got 161/wheels (different day but my PAW and others has never really changed from one r/r day to the next).I was never happy with my cars on road performance compared to the earlier cars before I even went near a r/r and was happy when I went to the r/r day and got similar figures to the other MY00's.
as I do not want to go for FMIC and big turbos I do not see the point of say a Link ECU,especially after being in john banks car ,so have tried to get a PPP ECU but they are like rocking horse sh1te so if there is a good standard ECU available this may be a good compromise.

Mine was a September 1999 car (but unsure how long it sat around before being registered as a V-reg)
Brown sticker on the ECU and responded well to exhaust and filter modifications (271bhp on a very cold day at PE)
Two dealers independant of each other commented how quick the car was compared to others they had seen!

this is great info, keep them coming.does anyone know the colours of babber and floyd's old and new ECU's,reg and seat belt dates?
DWK,has your m8 noticed any improvements to his car with the black lable ECU?
C/C,thanks for the offer but I do not want to remove fuel cut.I am in no doubt that upping the boost would make the car better.it sounds like what I need,is to try and get one of these earlier ECU's running more advance and below fuel cut.

T-UK,
Just had a look at my ECU as you request. I have a MY00 (X registration), from new, with a GREEN sticker AE802 ECU.
Its my first Impreza so can not comment on performance. Having said that, whether just used to the power or getting worse, after the 22.5K service, before Xmas, I fitted a Dawes - VERY impressed now :-) It's a company car so can not do anything too obvious if you know what I mean!
I have previously posted about slight "hesitation" problems mainly when cold and have always reported this to the dealer. Maybe I could use this ongoing problem to force the dealer to replace the ECU with a pre-MY00 version (BLACK label?) for gratis ;-)
Steve.

john banks,
I know ,but if the green ECU is running more retard I will always be worse off than earlier ECU's.
I think I need a PPP,that thing of yours goes well ,it just keeps getting better.

He is very happy with it, the car pulls a lot better now.
But its also upped its intake of motion lotion!!!

You don't need a PPP m8. You need a MY99 ECU, fuel cut lifted by 2 PSI, knock and lambda and a good MBC or EBC setup.
I am now totally convinced you can get a MY99/00 car (and probably others) to run as well as most of them with a Dawes if get the right bleed and adjust the actuator if necessary.

thanks Steve, the Dawes does transform these cars .a m8 has a X reg too so I am going to have a look at his ECU/seatbelt tomorrow.his car felt down on power until we fitted the Dawes now it goes great,it's totally standard bar the Dawes.
DWK,there are that may threads on the go it's hard to keep track on what was said where.thats good news though,if he gets fed up of the fuel consumption I'll buy it -no chance I bet

I have a MY99, seatbelts 05/99 brown sticker ecu AE 801, Car registered Oct 99 on a V plate. Runs very well no hesitating boosts to 13.5 approx holds 12-12.5psi.
Does anyone know the difference between the black 800 and the brown 801,wonder why Subaru they swapped ecu's half way through a Model Year?

checked a m8's MY00 X-reg,01/00 on seatbelt and it has the green ECU AE802,suspected it would be as it hesitates low down and has always felt down on power.this is the car we fitted a Dawes to recently and it goes much better now.
