Default annoying high pitched squeal

i've got a 97 2.0ltr non turbo impreza with a really annoying high pitch squeal. doesn't happen for about the first ten minutes of driving then just appears it does it for as long as i can hear it over the exhaust and until i come to a complete stop the noise doesn't vairy what ever speed im doing just a constant noise. i've changed the brakes and checked the wheel bearings for any play i've also checked the rear diff oil and the gearbox oil i dont think it is engine noise as i have turned the engine off and just let it roll and the noise is still there any ideas anyone

The wife or girlfriend .

Have a look at your suspension bushes they might be worn. Surpisingly they can make the noise your hearing.

the anti roll bar d bushes are worn plus the antiroll bar link arms are worn you think that could cause the noise

alternator! sounds like the bearing in the alternator pulley is running dry... spray some WD40 on the pulley, and allow it to soak in for an hour or so. tale the car for a run, and if the noise goes, you know the alternator is on its way out.

3 options you have...

1. squirt some thin oil into the alternator pulley (power steering oil or ATF oil will do)

2. have the alternator removed, stripped down and repaired.

3. buy a new one!

hope this helps

I had a similar sound from my 2002 STI, tried everything! but couldn't seem to get to the bottom of the sound. Car was due an MOT at the time so asked the garage to check everything, turned out it was a wheel bearing and I also needed a new drive flange too!!! they said there was no free play in the bearing either so not an easy one to spot!
