Default Help please Gearstick gone sloppy.

I have a 1993 Impreza WRX.totally standard import RHD. 60k miles.

Was just sitting in traffic and went to select first and gearstick dropped and felt like it wasnt connected to anything found second by pulling it as for back as it would go (unnatural angle). Managed to get home.

I can select all the gears but mainly by luck! and with the lever in all kinds of angles.

I am guessing i have snapped a linkage but is this common and where can i find a diagram of the setup before i jack it up and go looking underneath?

thanks for any help.

The base of the gear lever is attached to the shift rod by a 6mm dia roll pin. If that is very loose/about to come out that could be the prob.
You need to get under the car to see. On a ramp would be very nice.

Otherwise, could be a selector fork is slipping INSIDE the box. You know the answer to that.

A decent garage can check the first idea.

No, but when you are there you will quickly see the mechanism and the pin I refer to.
The pin is normally a pig to drift out so I will be surprised if it is loose/missing, but if the box has been out recently, that could do it.
Pull the inside gaiter down to expose the upper mechanism. There is a cross bolt there too, but unusual for any of this to loosen. Sometimes the base of the shifter by the box looses its bias spring which pulls the lever to 3/4h plane. Big spring, about 50mm long and 10 in dia and bloody strong. They can rust and part company..
