Question

Have they changed the intercooler between these years?

96 has a smallish one at a slight angle. 97 seems to have a bigger one mounted square

Or has this car had a 'uprated' i/c? Seems like an odd mod?

no they did change it.
its slightly larger.. sTi (97) ones look the same but have better internals and then you can go for a front mount one if ur feeling rich

p.s. this should be in general technical or drivetrain

Thanks - no mods intended, just want to be sure I can say "yes its standard" to the insurance company with a straight face.

Sorry it's in the wrong forum.

The Sti ones are sprayed with the STI logo too... there are other after market top mounted ones you can get but its probably standard. Just go to a scooby meet n compare
