400 bhp area gearbox
I have a 95 import wrx with only 330ish bhp at the mo but am hopefully going up to 400, my question is this, my 'box is already failing (noisy when backoff in 3rd and 4th).
What 'box would you recommend for the power I want? One that is going to be cost effective and also not so noisy on a journey I go deaf!
I thought about the 6 speed from a new age but they are 2k plus vat cheapist plus if I did one of them I would love a dccd with it but think they are very rare and also would be a lot more hassle to fit.
Any help with this question guys and ladies would be very welcome

Unless your prepared to change the gearbox on a regular basis you will need a 6 speed or PAR / PPG gearset for your box, either way is expensive.

it's what i was advised to look for when i was running 350 / 340 and my oe UK box was whining . . . . but i knew i was gonna for more eventually so i went straight for the PPG

im running a v4 5 speed on my 2.5, and it seems fine, done 27k in it, but i suppose not ragging it every where is helping the survival.
If you are going to be ragging it all over the shop or doing track days you maybe better off buying the 6 spd as iirc the ppg box has an annoying whine, which clashes with the burble lol.
I think i would also like a 6 spd box at some point but for the moment the 5 spd seems to do the job just fine with me running about 360hp and 390lbs of torque.

options as said realy 6 speeder or ppg gearset, either option isn't gonna give you anychange from 2k and prob work out a bit more.
also your gonna need an engine build to get to 400 and keep reliability.

PPG gearset is excellent. I've had mine in for over 6 months now and I love the whine it makes. They are available in a helical cut as well if you dont want the whine although it wont be as strong as straight cut. Will cost you more than 2k though, even if you build the box yourself.

The PPG 5speed kit is £2800 supplied and fitted with oil for your reference, thats from Zen Performance where i got mine done. I got the helical gearset and it whines but its adictive. I rarely use my radio now i like it that much.

I am running over 500bhp/500lbft on the six speed. Has taken a lot of launches and track use. PowerStation / Litchfields Type25 Race Car used (and is still running with it now) an untouched 6sp box. That did flat shifting (yes.... even with the standard syncro set-up) and is a ok.
I believe my standard diff's could be the first thing to go with a lot of launching, but we will see.
I do however know of someone that has bust quite a few 6sp boxs with about the same power as me on the drag strip. But this is believed to be because he is brutal with his gearchanges, so is probably smashing the syncro to bits (changing gear before the box can catch up so to say).
Above all, the 6sp box is very very strong.

I have watched gearbox, diff and driveshaft breakages for somee time and while i waslurking. I think the .W.M. is right. Some people make a transmission last and some drivers are like rough and break them easy.
