Grating noise on overrun.
I think it is quite normal to get a synchromesh whine on the overrun, but in the last couple of weeks my car (standard MY02 WRX) has quite a pronounced grating/graunching noise on the overrun. Not noticeable on short runs, so seems worse when hot. Dipping the clutch stops it.
Recently had to replace the Neutral position Switch (again ) could that have initiated something?
Is it most likely to be clutch (given a clean bill of health 3 months ago) or gearbox or something else?

I had the same on my old WRX03 PPP wagon at about 25k miles. It still did it at 67k miles when it was sold. The noise never got any worse even when I subjected the car to 340 hp at about 40k miles.
It wasn't clutch related.
I just assumed it was a feature of the gearbox and lived with it.

mine does this, and like yours it only does it when warm after longer runs.
its a whine on overrun, but i only seem to get it in second gear.... mine also stops when dipping the clutch. its not hideously noticeable but its enough to make me think about it. did some reading and most info points to it just being a noisey gearbox. mines a MY02 with PPP and she's done 50k (i've only done approx 800 miles since buying her) but i'm probably just going to leave it and see if it gets any worse.

I had a strange grating/vibrating noise on the overrun in my legacy. New clutch and flywheel fixed it. It sounded like the exchaust was rubbing on the driveshafts or back axle, very strange.

Hmmm.... since my last post, mines actually got a bit more noticable
are clutches relatively easy on the scoob, or a complete pig to change? (hence costly in labour).

Probably not the clutch, I'm afraid.
Mine used to whine on over-run, on a classic from about 2 weeks after it was fitted. It blew up about 18 month later.
