Six speed box in classic....
Hi folks,
what are ur thots on the six speed box fitted to the classic cars, does it work well, hold big power etc??
I have a 1999 RB5 and am currently upping the power gradually (front mount, big fuel pump, regulator, boost controller, Haltec ECU, bigger turbo etc) and will be thinking of upgrading the gearbox in the new year and was wondering if the 6 speed box out of the later cars works well and is reliable, or would i be better with an sti box out of a classic?? I know the sti boxes have very close ratios and i thought maybe the 6 speed would level the power out better and stand more abuse??
Any thoughts or experiences with fitting different boxes would be great lads.
Thanks
Kevin

The 6 speeds can certainly handle the power, there are a lot of big power biulds running them.
Fitment wise it would be easiest to source a UK STI 6 speed and a classic auto prop for your car - should fit straight in - don't forget the linkage

Is it a straight fit then the 6 speed box?? What are the 6 speed boxes like high up the revs, are they easier on fuel cos of the extra gear or are they geared similarily to the 5 speeders??
My mate has an sti and i know when he is in 5th gear and im in 5th gear at the same speed his car is revving the head off itself and mines insnt??
Thanks

UK 6th is similar to a UK 5th
All you need is what I mentioned above, your 5 speed clutch will fit straight on. Its when you try to fit a JDM or MY05 (IIRC) boxes on that you need extra bits - its all doable at the end of the day

Great job then, ill maybe go for the 6 speed then!! Do u know of anyone who supplies these and how much i should pay (delivery required to n. ireland)??
Would a v5 sti box or that not leave my car much quicker up thru the gears though cos of the closer ratios??
Cheers matey!!

Try David at Welcome to the API website
Watch out for the rear diff ratio for the jap or UK box as there are differences.
David can advise and he normally has them in stock.

Thanks folks, i will get onto these contacts and see the what the score is. I know that if i put in a classic sti box in i will also need the matching diff so i think i will go with the 6 speeder as these seem unbreakable and less hassle!!

My 99 classic has a 6 speed box but I don't know what its from.
Cruising on the motorway is okay, or would be if the exhaust wasn't so loud!
It also has a 2WD option with it, but I have not used this.
I get about 27 mpg with V Power with various mods.
Smooth change but I find it is easy to put it in the wrong gear!

I would avoid the JDM 6 Speed box if you are going for a decent amount of power unless you really like changing gear alot, the UK 6 speeds have better ratios. I read on here (I don't know first hand) that the forester 6 speed has the best ratios for a high power road car.
I think andyf removed the 6 speed from his spec c in favour of a 5 speed. The 6 speed can take far more abuse than the 5 speed though unless you go ppg.
