Question

He's just asked me whats gonna happen to his engine
Sounds like he checks the oil regular as he put 5 litres in
(Its not a scoob by the way)

Well, anyone know what effect this oil will have on his engine?

Cheers

John

Question

Oh dear. 5 litres? What did he do - fill it up till it came out of the rocker cover? if he did then he'd better drain it asap .

I take it he did an oil change and not a top up.....

Sorry can't help with the Question though but as long as he does an oil change with the correct stuff I can't see it being much of a problem - how long till he realised his mistake?

As far as I know the only main differences are the "detergents/de-coking agents" that are added. I know some people who have used it to flush petrol engines.
I'd advise him to change the oil, but I don't think it will cause any long term problems.

Thumbs up

He shouldn't do any immediate damage: diesel oils just have different additive packages to cope with their special requirements (better carbon / particulate removal and more anti-shear additives). Just go to a garage, get it drained, refill with the right stuff. Best change the filter too.

Much easier to deal with than filling the petrol tank with diesel!

Don't think he should feel too bad 'cos the packaging for petrol and diesel oils is pretty similar with certain brands.

Cheers, he's left for his 75 mile journey home

And it wasn't a oil change (although in a way it was.!) he just don't bother checking the oil..not the sort of owner you wanna be buying a used car from.

Lets see if he makes it back into work in the morning
