If your clutch is on the way out, you'll know about it.

Most noticeable when pulling off at a roundabout the engine will rev up, but the car will either pull off very slowly or not at all.

try driving at 30 in 3rd drop it into 5th and hold your foot hard to the floor up to about 60mph if the revs rise and your speed dont its slippin

if its not slipping and your just gettin clutch judder try givin it a good 5k launch to clean the clutch plate up lol lol

i may be wrong but i have clutch judder in my classic, have heard its something to do with the fly wheel, dont think theres alot you can do with it unless you want to replace it,or do what im doing and wait till it goes then get a better clutch!

Lots have had clutch judder before including me (new age), one way of temp removing this problem is to do a standing start with decent clutch slip to "clean up" the clutch and flywheel surface - note, it still will come back at some point. I now run an AP organic clutch and no problems at all.

As before, if clutch had it, then you'll notice engine revs shoot up but you wont move that far but clutch judder doesn't mean the clutch is worn out.

another way to check is to apply the hand brake and try and pull off in 1st gear, if the car isn't pulling (the car should dip) the clutch has gone, or is on it's way out

Start the car, put hand brake on hard and and put it into 3rd or 4th gear. Raise clutch slowly. If clutch is slipping car will remain stationery with revs rising. dl

Ideal way to burn out a perfectly good clutch as well!

Any stationary test, if the clutch is engaged slowly enough will allow the car to sit stationary while the overheated clutch slips like heck and trashes itself.

To test for slip, put it in third, floor it until its on boost and stab the clutch down and up, the revs will flair as you stab the pedal down, when it comes up the revs should drop immediately back down giving you a slight 'thump', if the revs drop slowly or stay where they are until vehicle speed ctaches up, then the clutch is slipping!

My type r has just started slipping i think when on full throttle in 4th and when it comes on boost the revs rise not too quickly tho, but it doesn't seem to pull like it used too :-( first i thought it was spinning the wheels as I was on a damp road but then it did it the other day in the dry aswell.

Why does it only do it in fourth n not second or third??

standard clutch aswell car's done 69k

thanks

Clutch judder is a common problem on impreza's , i took mine back to the dealer a few weeks after i bought it and they said they had a brand new demostrator that was doing it, fitting a new clutch may fix it but may not.

Mine lasted 3 year after that mostly at over 300bhp, giving the car a good hard launch when warmed up does seems to clear the problem for a while but it will come back.

When mine finally gve up it started slipping in 5th first then 4th.

I'm now running an Exedy Clutch and flywheel and have had no problems since.

Tiss, its all to do with torque, in higher gears the engine produces more torque, the car has more air resistance, etc, etc, basically the clutch is working hard...depending on the speed you're testing at, sometimes 5th can be the first sign of trouble when driving hard.

Exedy clutch still may not solve the problem, Just had Exedy twinplate and lightweight flywheel fitted to my classic, I still get slight judder when pulling off in first, But apart from that nothing but praise for it its a fantastic clutch!!
Fairly confident a organic clutch will solve your problem tho.
Hope this helps.
Steve.

if its clutch judder i would be inclined to check the engine mounts as they do go soft. but thats my opinion. i had a peugeot that was like you described. it was the mounts in the end.

If it's slipping you'll know about it. It's the same as any other car/van/wagon in that respect.

Clutch judder, as has already been mentioned, launch it. 1st gear, clutch pedal depressed, 4-5k rpm and jump your foot off the clutch. Not advisable out of a junction though.
