Default Is it possible to get a DCCD box into a UK classic?

I take it its a big job but I know it can be done. I want DCCD on my UK car.

How much are we looking at in cost - assuming I give the car to someone who can do it so labour is a factor too. I can't do it myself.

I want to keep my car but I want DCCD. I know it and I know its history. Rather spend the money on my car to what I want rather than buy a car I don't know.

I have just put a dccd into my non dccd Sti V3 so the same task.
It is a big task, and the labour costs would be horrendous.

The Type R box was £450 + some new parts at API so £600 total.
dccd controller if you can find one: £300 (more to it than meets the eye)

You then have to wire it all up and fit it all.

Good guy will take 3 days to strip and wire and fit the transmssion. At £30/hr if lucky (?) = £720 + vat = £850

Hope this helps.

Hi mate you need the DCCD gearbox, ecu, loom, roller switchand the dash clocks. Or you mcan buy a DCCD control box(do a search on here for them).Labour wise its about 2 hours to fit the box and then depends on what you go for to control it, but as above it takes alot of time to fit the wiring £27 an hour at my garage, depends where you are im at stella motors in dove holes derbyshire.
Cheers Rob

I was thinking it would be about £1500 all in - £2K to include new clutch & Fwheel.

Is it something that API would do? The engine won't be big figures, just something with low lag and driveable so I would assume a healthy classsic DCCD box will take it (330 ish??)

You'll also have to factor in a rear diff too, your UK one is the wrong ratio

Forgot about the rear diff!
£350 from API!
There, that's your 2000 spent for you.

Ask yourself why you want it???

I had a TypeR for three years and only used the DCCD on about three occasions.

1. In the snow to lock the diffs and get up a sloping driveway (Twice)
2. In a muddy field, to get out of it easier (Locked diffs again)
3. In really torrential conditions I have used it, just because it was there!

Probably about 5 times in total. If anything, I would say you get more feel from a standard 50/50 diff setup than the DCCD when its not on as well.

Also, unlike the ADCCD on the newage cars, you have to turn it off, for slow speed manouvering.

Save your money! Unless you lve in Scandinavia, the cotsworlds or on a loose rally stage.

£2k will buy a lot of nice stuff.

Will West Wales do?

Well, I looked at a Type R about 12 months ago and the boy had owned the car for a year and said I was the first person to fiddle with it.

Really, I was just thinking if when I up the engine power the gearbox breaks I may as well upgrade it to a DCCD box.

V5/6 STI RAs with DCCD are going for 10K and my UK turbo for the same year will barely shift for 6 these days. I just don't want to give my car away that I know all its history for a car nearly twice the price and without knowing its full history. I was just working in the basis that as thinks break on my car I will upgrade it as I go or when (if) money allows.

Wait!
If you really want to go the dccd route then go for it!

I have mine with a trick mod for fully locked trans at a touch of a button for max traction in first, then the dccd reverts to pre-set position.
Been a real slog to do it but it is what I wanted.

Follow your own dream!

Is it true you can just wire the dccd in with a direct 12v supply without all the switches and brains?
I was thinking of a switch on the steering wheel for starts only, sounds similar to what 911 has done.
Its to go in a dedicated race car so I basically want it on or off.
Thanks steve.

Steve:
I think not.
In 'open' mode shall we call it, the split will be tricky to drive as the diff goes fully open.
There are 6 settings on the dash. Best all-round position is to turn the control knurled **** to fully open and then advance it to the first orange light (3rd light up on the dash) and then 'just' back it off towards the open position (orange going back to 2nd green) Fully locked is Red!

I sourced the ecu, the knurled **** and eventually dispensed with the lights. Most of the wire job is for the dash board lights!

There are wire diagrams available but it is no joke as you need relays etc.

I did a detailed step by step install a few month ago on my projects thread, 'Searching for the perfect chassis'. Search on there.

Id also upgrade your rear brakes to 2pots, the standard single pots.....
Now you see the reason that subaru fitted 2pots to its DCCD cars as you get more power going to the rear wheels means you need to have better braking there, add some more cash on for that!
Also bin your ABS cos you cant use it either.....

I was looking at getting the brembo front and rear setup from a newage.

Some people have said that their ABS works with DCCD. Although if Subaru couldn't do it I'm not sure how others have

Exactly.
I've spent a dreadful time removing the abs because of the dccd!

Never gave the rear brakes a thought though...

MoT tomorrow and the first drive of my dccd/nonabsStiV3 hillclimber!

I shall be fitting a DCCD box to my rally car tomorrow (just added a transfer case to the dog box that we already had)...

I looked into various solutions for the diff controller and read 911's thread in detail...
I looked at installing the subaru wiring...but decided it was too much hassle..
Neetronics controller was another option as a standalone unit, but i do not have a speedo drive in the box..

So the final solution was to add the GEMS controller (£450+vat). Programmed by Steve Simpson Motorsport.
This unit is set up for varios switcheable conditions, gravel ,tarmac etc .
Inputs are taken from the throttle position, brake pedal, handbrake, revs, and converted to the best setup to give the most grip...a proper piece of kit..
Will also be adding a rear plated diff (purchased for the grand sum of £30.00...)

Car is a 93 RA ...

Sorry Graham....Diff was a 4.44, but we run 4.11 so did a swop with the CWP.

Link to the gems.. General Engine Management Systems Ltd

Rang round all of the dealers, but the best deal was from Steve Simpson (although not the cheapest)... His unit came pre programmed. The settings apparently being tested/tweaked by David Higgins the rally driver..

Jon:
Can you please keep me posted as to how this all works out?
I am surprised GEM's or Steve can pre-map for conditions with just those inputs, though I know Steve is a wizz-kid on all things GEM.

It killed me finding a ready-to-use 4:444 R160 lsd.

Most interesting.

will keep you upto date graham....

Got the box in today, rear diff changed(worth every penny of £30.00....sorry graham), fitted new powerflex diff bushes, steering rack bushes and ehaust rubbers, downpipe back on....just a few bits to put back into the engine bay and we will be ready to fire it up..
Then next weekend, fit the new rear calipers and discs, and then fit 7lb springs to the front calipers.

Graham,
Its a spring that fits behind the pistons in the caliper to keep enough pressure on the pads to disc..or so i am told.
The AP Galfer 6 pot calipers that we have did not come with them fitted and basically we were getting a soft peddle/ecessive travel under very hard braking. Apparently the springs resolve this problem...
They come as either 4lb or 7lb variety..

Steve, I think you do leave it once you have a sweet spot, or at least I will be. I've seen several people get into serious trouble fiddling with the knurled wheel while trying to drive fast on a 50 second hill climb.

TBH I'm hoping I havn't wasted all this time doing the dccd!

We will see this year.

The plated diffs are another thing.....

So those springs simply bring the pad into near contact with the disc faces, be interested to see those too.

John, i thought the same about the rear calipers, but you expressed it !

There is an ad on LADSOC for the Neetronics DCCD controller if you aren't sorted yet.
