A guy in work said he had an old M5 that had a dog box, and the gear pattern was reversed

I shall slap him for this

*SOME* cars can have a gearbox pattern that starts with 1st away and back as opposed to away and forward.

So its model specific then, nothing to do with dog box then.

I think someone in work is trying to pretend they know more than they do

I think there is some confusion here between a 'Dog Leg' box, i.e. some Getrags, and a 'Dog' Engagement box.

Some cars had what they call a 'dog leg' 1st (E30 M3 for example). It just means that when going from 1st to 2nd you have to cross a gate (like the way you change from 2nd to 3rd in a normal gearbox) 2nd to 3rd on a dogleg box is a straight shift.

a few competition gear sets (not Subaru) can re-work the gear positions to do with ease/frequency of use....................

Ford Cosworth's used to have a 6spd gear set with an "dog-leg" 1st (to the left and back) on its own and then 2nd(forward) & 3rd(back) were on the same gate, 4th(forward) & 5th(back), and then 6th(forward) & reverse(to the right and back)...............

It's only the Australian dog box gear kits that are upside down and back to front.

Dog leg box means you fluff the shift to 2nd gear instead of usually fluffing 3rd on a normal box
