Default Whinning noise poss gearbox on 2001 WRX

Hi All

I have a 2001 UK WRX estate with only 27000 miles and FSSH. I am Having a problem when I slow down and put it in 1st with the clutch on the floor I keep getting a whinning noise. I know the gearboxes whin a little but this has only started a cupple of days ago but it does the same when going backwards. It drives fine all the gears are ok but this whinning noise as I come to a stop is driving me MAD . The gearbox oil was changed by subaru in the last service. Can anyone help I have done a search but with no luck.

Could be a diff? ... did the oil get changed on these also?

Could even be a wheel bearing perhaps.

.. does it do it when coasting / slowing down to a stop in neutral?

Not to sure on the oil it was a 30,000 mile service. It only does it when coasting in gear. In neutral it's fine.

More questions I'm afraid .. just trying to build a picture.

It sound like the gearbox is the culprit but do you struggle to get it in gear at all?
What oil was put in the box?
I've read different effects with different gearbox oil ... I believe Syntrax oil gets more votes than most of the others and tends to make the gearbox quieter and allow it to slip nicely into gear.

It seems to go into gear fine. looking at the service history from cheam motors LEG gear oil part number SACC3188A that's all it says.

Hi PJ-STI,

Just a small experience of my own. I drive a '99GT 5sp manual and it has dramatically changed sound (for the better) since i changed the gear oil.

I use a Valvoline SynPower 75W90 and it does quiet up both rear diff and gearbox. In my setup, i use hardned gearbox mountings, so noise is transmitted quite well to the cockpit.

Well - hope you get it sorted out.

Cheers,
Jesper
