Default p1 rear knocking graunching noise.

Hi guys first post on here, just got a p1 my third impreza after a bugeye wrxppp, and a bugeye sti. ive had it 4 days and have broke it already!!!
the problem is that at very low speed ie 10 mph or less, there is a terrible graunching knocking noise from the drivers side rear. ive had a quick look about and everything visable seems fine and doesnt apear to be wheel bearings.
the noise is worse when slowing down and when first pulling away. at first the noise happened only when hitting bumps but now its pretty much constant. the noise totally disapears at anything above 20mph and doesnt effect handling, braking or acceleration.
the diff casing is very warm too is that normal??
as the wheels turn at slow speed its almost like a brake with a warped disk catching but the brakes are fine.
ive had the knocking noise on cars before when suspension bushes have gone but never the feeling like the brake being on or the graunching noise that comes at low speed.
any ideas guys as im a bit gutted at the mo!!!!!!!!

tried it again tonight, its definatly getting worse too. its in time with the wheels turning at low speeds, does it in both forwar and reverse, sounds and feels just like a brake sticking but there not.
help!!!!!!!!

Hi
could possably be the handbrake shoes,They may need adjusting and or the discs takeing off to inspect if the lineing has come off.You may find that if you adjust the hand brake shoe to discs clearance ,The noise may go away.

Question

A continual noise or an occasional one off graunching noise?

Sometimes the P1/STiV dampers can exhibit stiction during low speed manoeuvring, but that feels more like something sticking, then releasing - as if a brake pad has stuck to the disk and then quickly freed itself. Replacement of the dampers and, to be certain, the mounts would fix the latter.

Beat me to it. I don' think that it's the brake as i tried that route when i had this issue on my P1 and it made no difference. Mike Wood of prodrive (daddy of P1!) said that dampers decline rapidly after about 30k miles anyway so if you have the cash, it might be worth doing the lot.

thats exactly what it feels like. as if brake sticks then comes off. the mounts are being replaced on tue is it fine to drive it till then??
the prob is only at low speed above 15 mph no noise at all. when stopping and pulling away theres a clunk like a brake pad releasing. is that the right kind of noise

Seems to be a common problem, I think mine might be the same although the recent MOT did'nt pick up a problem or is this normal?

Not a safety issue really so I would assume that it's not on the MOT list.

As Mike Wood of Prodrive responded to the orginal poster elsewhere (https://www.scoobynet.com/suspension...on-fit-p1.html) , some of the original dampers have a tendency for the bearings to go oval so giving some slop in the damper action. This can lead to a sticking sensation (stiction) at low speeds where the forces are comparatively low. Higher speed / forces will overcome the friction so you don't notice it at higher speeds. Ultimately it can lead to rattling /clonking, but still probably not a real safety issue just it's noisy and wont handle as well side to side (My P1 would definitely let go quicker at the back on left handers (on track)rather than right handers and it was my back driver's side strut that was sticky).

hi guys yes def sounds a prob with p1s does anyone fancy a bulk purchase on something that will cure it. mines in being sorted as we speak but the garage is pretty useless so not expecting much from them does anyone have a good alternative to the p1 dampers for these either subarus or an aftermarket kit.

So what's the best dampers to fit in conjunction with P1 Springs ??

Considering the original dampers decline rapidly after about 30,000mls.

cheers

Can anyone help with this one?

I was looking at low mileage second hand P1 suspension but £500 seems a bit of a gamble considering..

I noticed new P1 springs were quite reasonable at the main dealers ( dampers ouch!) but not sure what dampers to fit with them on my 99 uk classic.

if you go to the P1woc site, you will find alot of info about the rear knocking, seems most to be the rear shock mount

So what would be the better option, second hand P1 suspension or STi 5/6 ?

cheers

No it isn't - Mike Wood of Prodrive confirmed what the problem was as mentioned above.

STi5/6 type R dampers and P1 dampers are interchangeable, it's just the eibach springs that are P1 specific. So if you can get a good cheap set of the STi dampers then just swap the springs over.
