i gotta slight snick between first and second on my 93WRX has always been like it and on a slower more deliberate change it goes away also a pain in the **** to get into reverse sometimes snick is more apparent when hot previous owner told me ( although he may have been a liar) that all early jap cars are like this even when he had the clutch replaced it stayed the same but who knows still sounds like a clutch problem too me

Change the oil. It's the cheapest thing to try for a kick off and more likely than not, the cause of your problem. When did you last change the gearbox oil? Make sure you use the correct grade, good quality oil. I couldn't tell you the correct grade to use off the top of my head but I'm sure you'll find it if you do a search. It amazes me how garages can diagnose gearbox problems without at least trying an oil change first. Hot or cold, it doesn't matter, once the oil is spent that's it.
I know of an Evo5 driver was on the verge of having his gearbox rebuilt following a track day. He had to drive home with only 2 selectable gears. He tried an oil change and hey presto no problems.
Clean looking oil is no indication either, is it the correct grade?

Sounds like you need some professional advice on this. I can recommend Ian Brown - telephone 01524 734541. I know he is very reliable and builds 3 or 4 of these every week.
I am sure he will be happy to give some advice.
Hope this helps,
Impreza Babe.
