Default weird whine when hot

help needed please 1998 sti ver 5, my girlfriends drives the car everyday to work and back aprox 20 miles, not really doing over 70mph and the gear box is fine, but when your sat on a duel carriageway at 70/80 mph there is a strange whining noise that appears after 10 mins of driving, the noise is like a noisy heater fan, it seems to change with acceleration but is there in every gear up and down the box, i have changed the oil to castrol sync and also the power steering fluid is new but the noise remains, i have got a idea it is a dry bearing in the box when gets very hot, has anyone experienced this before? any advice appreciated as it is starting to do my head in

Could be a diff or a wheel bearing?

Does the pitch of the noise change when roadspeed changed? A whine in my gearbox turned out to be a knackered centre diff - gearbox out etc.

hi dont know if it helps or not but there a p1 diff and gear box on ebay at mo.
the road speed will also affect wheel bearings, is the noise deff from gearbox.
i had an old sti that did 20k with a strange gear whine dont worry to much. only if its getting progressivly worse get all gear oils changed that kind a thing check the gear teeth
