when my car had a front bearing done the noise i was hearing was a knocking which was obviously increasing with speed , it also went away during braking (obviously because the caliper was gripping the disc and stopping the movement) just drive into a local garage and whip the front end up on a jack and grap the whell and give it a good check for play

For nearly a year I've (with many good mechanics) have been trying to track down the source of weird noises coming from the front left hand side of the car. The wheel bearing has been checked countless times, while most of the front-end suspension has been renewed. At some point the steering rack mounting bolts had been left loose, so the mounts were gone. They've been replaced along with the front anti-roll bars mounts.

Throughout this whole series of events, I've had scrapping noises, creaking, groaning and all sorts of noises I've even experienced total loss of braking on the first press of the pedal. Fine once I've lifted off and press again.

Took the car to bit the other night and the wheel bearing is ****ed. I think the hub might be shagged as well. I wish I did the bearings last year, when I did the rears. Hopefully once the car assembled it should be noise free.

One of my mates had similar issues to mine, without all the noises and that turned out to be the bearing. He had to purchase a new hub as well I think you need to check the wheel bearings as soon as possible

Hope this helps, Phill

just to add a bit to this post cos im cheeky

to check for play, with the wheel in the air, hold the tyre from the top and bottom and give it a good push pull.

if you hold the wheel from the front and back you can get play from the power stearing, which should go away when the engine is running.

if you take your car to a quick fit or somewhere like that they will usually check it for free, and only takes them a min.

Default Worn hub assembly

If it's not the wheel bearing going, then it may well be the same thing I had on mine- ie the hub assembly goes slack (wears out and goes slightly oval) where it fits into the bearing. It's a known 'fault' to Subaru and can happen for no particular reason and at any time- my car had only done 41K miles when it started, never abused or raced etc either. The noises (creaking, groaning, scraping, clunking etc) would come and go but gradually got worse over the course of about 4000 miles, combined with excessive brake pedal travel. After checking everything, and even re-greasing the CV joints I took it Subaru in Peterborough who diagnosed it very quickly. They replaced the bearing and hub assembly and all is well- not cheap at £449, but whoever does the job will need specialist extractors to get the bearing out etc. It's not a 'heat the bearing holder with a welding torch and smack the ****** out with a lump hammer' job!
