car jumps when reversing with lock
and when going forwards sometimes with full lock 
also makes a really horrible noise Any ideas?

To be honest I only normally revers the car when I'm leaving work so the car is always cold. Centre diff - sounds expensive 
Was it easy to replace?

My MY06 STi does this, and its down to the DCCD. With mine I either lift the handbrake one notch so the light is on, or set the dccd to green (back position), and it cures it.

DCCD i wish, just plain Jane UK MY97 unfortunately! Cheers drb5 sounds like it's time for a back breaking box out session. Or step up the search for the holy grail (Type R box).
