Which Gearbox
Hi all,
Currently i have a 1993 wrx import running about 300-320ish bhp. It requires a new clutch and im fitting a lightened flywheel at the same time. I would at some time like to get her to around 400ish so should i change my gearbox while doing the clutch etc.
If so what should i change it to i.e sti one? Dont have that much to spend so im not looking anything very rare or expensive just something that will handle the power ok.
Cheers
Drew

It is torque that shreads a box.
I am running 380 bhp and 360 lbft torque through a stock Sti transmission with zero problems.
The car is hillclimbed in serious competition too.
I would look for an Sti v3 V4 V5 box and diff and rest easy.
Cost? About £500 plus fitting (hard job)
Graham
Oh, and fit an AP or Exeedy clutch from API.

I'd like to find that place and buy a few........................
To make a decent upgrade you'd need to go for V5 or 6 as the V3 / 4 box is not really significantly better to merit the cost.
Then you need a regular 4 door set up as the 2 door cars have bigger back diffs which would mean changing the whole rear hub set up and drive shafts etc. Way too complicated and expensive.
Budget for £1000 and be happy if you save much on that price.
Good Luck - David APi

Drew, There is a small issue with fitting the 2nd starter motor bolt and the late box has 6 bolts holding it to the engine block whereas the older box/block has only 4.
So you can only put in 4 bolts as there aren't corresponding holes in the engine half of the clutch housing.
Also, the original starter fixing on the TY752 is a bolt and a stud. You need to convert the stud into a threaded hole in the engine block so that you can bolt it in correctly.
OR some people just fit the starter with one bolt.............
You need a gearbox from a 99 - 01 WRX 4 door car. OR STi 4 door version, but you will need to change the rear diff and drive shafts and hubs etc too if you go over to an STi set up.
DO NOT buy a box from any RA anything or type R anything or a V limited anything.
This can be a minefield.

Just a plain old WRX 4 door IMPORT.

So david what do you recommend for the easyest way possible. Just a box out of a newer wrx. Will it handle the power ok and will only having 4 bolt be a problem.
Would a better option not be to have my current gearbox rebuilt with better internals to handle the power or is that not something that can be done?
Cheers

i forgot to say my goal would ideally be around 350-400bhp but its only for light track work and road use. Is fitting a sti box to much hassle. And does any one know what my standard box will take.
Forgot to say there is a main scooby breaker not to far from me and he breakes all scoobys so parts shouldnt be a problem.
I am going to get a new exedy clutch for it and lightened flywheel from you david as soon as i get the money and you have already quoted me for them.
Cheers

The realistic upgrade is to the TY754 cased gearbox from the list I offered above. That will be a worthwhile upgrade with an amount of safety at the horsepower levels you aim for. Torque is the killer, no matter which box you have. Allied to grip from either the clutch or the tyres.
Subject to my comments above, it is not a major drama to fit the TY754 into your car, just time consuming and once you have had pointed out the necessary things that need dealing with, there should be no surprises.
l'll pm you clutch costs etc.

Drew, About the only straight swap is from a MY99 / 00 import wagon
TY754 VB1AA
After that you'll need a hybrid or a diff swap if you cannot find one.

So that is the only model that will fit with out much hassel. I take it that is the one thats a six bolt you were mentioning earlier.
What if i was to get the box and diffs or am i causing more hassel again.
Also do you happen to know anywhere that has one?
Cheers David
