Default 5th gear whine

Morning all
I have had a high-pitched whine from the transmission for some time now. Only happens in 5th gear. You first hear it at about 50 mph and then at 70 mph. Both times it increase in volume and then declines, you drive through it. It is louder at 70 mph, however. But only happens under load, take foot off gas pedal and it stops, and putting the clutch in stops it.

Car is a my97 uk turbo. It has not been modified. Any suggestions?

Cheers
Nick

Ok then, lets try to eliminate some possible culprits.

The noise goes away when the clutch is depressed.

Does the transfer box disengage when the clutch is depressed? If it doesn't then this would rule the t/box out .

If you are sitting not moving with the clutch out and rev it up do you hear anything? If not then Id say main shaft bearing closest to 5th gear. Whatever way you look at it, its a new box or a rebuld.

Ok, thanks for that.
I've just sat in car with it stationary and
1) revved it with clutch out and could not here the noise that is the problem.
2) revved it with clutch in and same result.

Any ideas

Cheers
Nick
