Can anyone get 1st gear at anything but a virtual standstill? i have been told this normal but i cannot select unless doing less than 5mph

i have an 03 WRX SL PPP, are things different on STi's ?

I have the same issue on my STI 3 - crunches unless I am virtually stopped. There are no problems with the 'box, so must just be the way they are?

 

I have an 03 STI that has to be 'rammed' into 1st when cold.
I spoke to the owner of Jap Performance in Ellon who told me that this is normal with a standard box, and to avoid this, drop into reverse then into 1st as this lines up the cogs because for some reason those two are connected. I do it all the time when i'm not in a hurry because it works and that man knows what he's talking about !

 

A cold box will baulk going into first. Thick oil and all that. Going into 2nd first and first is far better. After a few changes, all is well.

My Sti v3 will neatly pop into 1st up to about 15/20 mph which is about 7000/8000 rpm. Only when everything is warm, but it will do it easy.
I hillclimb my Sti in competition and there are 2 bends where I need to drop to 1st for a fast exit of the corners.

Blip the throttle as you go through neutral this will get everything spinning at the same speed. SO it could be time to learn to heal and toe.

 

Very true, this is the technique I use on my MY99 UK Turbo.

 

1st gear at 35mph goes in without any force but its a my95
