Rear Diff help!!
Hi Guys
This isnt exactly what i wanted my first post to be but nevermind.
I have a MY01 WRX Bugeye which has had all of its oils changed this morning. The mechanic has found metal filings in the rear diff oil and he seems to think its had it. Coming from a Clio I havent got a clue about these cars yet so really im hoping you guys know more than me.
Does it sound like the rear diff needs changing or does It need inspecting further?? Also what kind of cost am I looking at to get this fixed??
Sorry for the essay but really wasnt expecting big bills after 2 months. Oh well

It is quite normal to find metal "filings" in both the rear diff and gearbox oil.
Chances are, there is nothing wrong with your diff, certainly if it was not making very obvious grinding noises that you could not miss.
I have a small strong magnet on both my gearbox and diff drain plug to collect such filings.
A replacement diff, depending on what you have/want £250.
Fitting inc. VAT under £100. New oil, maybe £30 max.
Be careful somebody is not trying to have you over. Is it a dealer/Who?
If there were no noises from the diff beforehand I think you are being led up the garden path.

To be honest harvey i was expecting a worse price than that. It is not a dealer no but he is someone who has worked on subarus quite a bit. To be honest i wouldnt say ive heard a grinding noise but there is some sort of noise which i cant really describe coming from the rear. I guess it sounds a little like a wurring noise. Does that make sense????

You are close to a good expert in the Midlands.
suggest you talk to David at www.apiengines.com and see what the opinion/options could be.
Diff are meant to be quiet like gearboxes. If you can hear 'something' then get good advice.
Suggest the diff is given fresh good quality/correct grade oil and driven down to David in Leamington Spa.

I recently replaced my rear diff on my bug WRX, I had a whirring noise as you describe for some time, not sure what it was, then bang rear diff blew.
Cost of replacement was around £200, litre of oil was £7.99
And I fit it myself in around 2 hours, (novice)
Hope that helps

Once ordered was on my doorstep the next morning, but if you are quite local to them there fitting/customer service is second to none.
The diff i got was a second hand unit, just replaced with some good oil and its as good as new
