Loud click / clank from rear diff area - help!!
MY95 STI RA
It happened after a WOT 3rd-4th-5th overtake.
I now have a loud clanking noise whenever I give the car throttle (be it light or more) when in gear. If I lift off the gas and coast in gear it is still there, but very quiet, same thing coasting in neutral. This happens in a straight line and I can't excentuate it more if I go round a corner.
The clanking (when on the gas) is loud and proportional to road speed, but there are more clanks than wheel revolution, I'd guess at 2:1 ratio.
I can feel the vibration through the gearstick, and the sound is similar to something knocking against the exhaust - but more a more solid sound IYSWIM
Diff? prop UJ? CV?
Help - needs to be sorted ASAP

Had a quick look in the car park, inner CVs look OK, rear diff shows no sign of leaking oil.
I'll have to get her in the air tonight, thats if it survives the 8 mile journey home!
Thinking about it, it could be a 4:1 ratio which points to diff or prop

Having popped down to have a look at lunchtime I have only gone and found under the bonnet in the tray near the windscreen a M10 bolt the length of my middle finger. Funnily enough the last work to be carried out was gearbox and prop removal to change a clutch and poorly balanced flywheel
So now I'll have to see where it should have gone, searching the forum you have to undo some bolts to remove the prop - I don't suppose its the type of bolt descibed above? Anyway even if it isn't related I'll have to find out where it should have gone, all I know is the gear box support bar is tied up correctly and I can't see any missing bolts in the engine bay.

The noise is louder
A gearbox specialist drove the car yesterday and thinks its a chipped tooth, but couldn't tell if it was from the gearbox or rear diff.
Its on the ramps at a garage this lunchtime to find out

Yes mate, rear diff - the noise is coming from the prop end rather than the CWP. The gearbox specialist still thinks its a chipped tooth though but either way I sourced a MY96 STI RA rear diff which is a straight swap, it'll be delivered Tuesday and I'm considering doing the job myself
There's no way I'm missing the ring and Spa, had the CC fully charged up for a PPG hit if necessary
