Default Sticking Clutch Pedal Problem Again!

Having the sticking clutch pedal problem on a MY93 WRX. The pedal sticks down after almost every gearchange and has to be flicked back up with my foot. If I accellerate hard when the clutch pedal is in its stuck position (half way down) the clutch slips.

I have bled the clutch today and used DOT 5.1 fluid, (because there was no DOT4 available) and it is still doing it. I have tried adjusting the pedal but found it very difficult and didnt think it would help.

I have done searches for posts on this and a key reason is that there is no return spring on the slave cylinder, underneath the intercooler. I have checked and I DO NOT have this spring but the holes to fit one are there, BUT I fitted one then tried the clutch pedal and notice that the slave cylinder pushes towards the front of the car which is the same way as the spring pulls? so if I put the spring on then surley this would be pulling the clutch on slightly and would make the sticking worse? did earlier cars have a different clutch system to the older ones i have heard push and pull types mentioned before.

I am now left with either two suggestions, either the master cylinder and slave cylinder are knackered hence the VERY black clutch fluid or its a spring issue some where.

I'd rather not replace the master and slave cylinders to find out its not them, they dont leak fluid and the clutch doesnt stick when the cars not running but after driving the first change out of first the clutch will stick and then keep doing it. The first inch of the pedal does also feel light.

Please read this long write up of my problem, and make any suggestions. Cheers,

GAZ.

It is only doing this because you dont have the spring on!

You need to fit the spring. It pulls the lever away from the pushrod to prevent the pushrod returning too far (which is exactly what is happening). Hence, when you depress the pedal, the rod is nowhere near the point of compressing the pressure plate, instead it takes 2 or 3 pumps of the pedal.

The spring in no way puts enough force on the pressure plate to induce slip.

Fit a new spring on and all will be well.

Totally correct (in my real experience...)
If that does NOT fix it then there is a trick to play, but you must have that light spring on!

Agree on all of the above... fit the spring.

The pedal may stick for the first pump or two but that will be then sorted.

cheers guys, thanks for taking the time to read my long write up.

What you say about the spring is starting to make sense to me but I have tried this before with a spring i found that was long enough to reach the two holes with out the pedal being pressed down and obviously it didnt do anything.

So do I need a fairly short spring that can reach the two holes then the push rod is all the way out? where can I get one from?

Cheers again, I'll report back shortly.
