I'm not sure how to explain this one but am wondering if anyone is experiencing a similar noise at startup.

Sometimes (maybe once a week)when I start my MY99 (no mods) I get what appears to be a knocking sound from the rear exhaust box - its clearly audible in the cabin - but then goes away after say 10 seconds on tick over. If I rev up the engine it will disappear quicker.

It doesnt seem to matter if the engine is hot or cold.

Its just damn wierd and I want to know what it is ?

have you listened to it standing outside the car? How does it sound then?

 

Hard to say as I've allways been sitting inside on turning the key !

I shall stand outside the car for the next week or so just to see if it happens and if so what it sounds like.

Not to mention the car is garaged so that probably affects the sound when it does it in the garage - however thats not the only place I have heard it.

I occasionally get what sounds like rushing water for about 5 seconds when I start up

Weird!

 

That is water moving around the heater system of your ventilation system

 

check that you exhaust is not tapping against the rear inner cv cup.
