Poor running after 45k service

A few months back we bought a 97 Sport and up until recently have been very happy with it.
We took it for a 45k service but the car has been a real pain since. The engine hesitates below 3000rpm and doesn't run smoothly at part throttle. I rang the dealer and was told the ECU had been reset as and it would be OK in a couple of days.
The car wasn't OK so we took it back to the dealer. They explained about an apparently well known 'characteristic' where the knock sensor advances the ignition after an oil change and the result is the hesitation. The dealer reset the ECU again and took the car for a run. On the drive home it seemed like a different car, it was so smooth and pulled like a train.
However....after a few days the hesitation and lumpy running is back again. Needless to say the car is going back to the dealer.
Has anyone else experienced this problem. Am I being strung a line here ?

Do a search on hesitation, loads of threads covering this but I dont know if anyones actually totally cured it.

ok it is a common problem more so on legacys for which there is a modded ecu. but you are not being strung along you can in extreme cases move the knock sensor to the bell housing a fix given to us by i.m themselves or try disconnecting the battery overnight this has the same effect as a select moniter resetting the ecu.

Dealer checked it and found nothing wrong with the timing. Recommended a new set of plug leads. Seems to run better with the new leads and the hesitation is not nearly as bad.
Maybe another reset will sort it.
