Getting rid of MY94 and been looking around and decided on a MY98 onwards but what about this piston slap and No.3 bigend thingy.
Is it common on these from 98 or rare and i shouldnt worry???

Hi Lee

There was a thread on this a few months back where someone had recorded the actual noise of piston slap when the car is cold and later when warm. Run a search see if you can find it.

I have an early MY98 where the piston slap has been sorted, this was completed by the last owner under warranty. I checked this with Carstins the local garage which serviced the car over the first 3 yrs. I have read somewhere that the engine no. is changed when piston slap is sorted, but in my service book the no. is unchanged and there is no other indication in the paperwork to identify the work done.

I have experienced no problems so far but I would suggest before you buy a MY98 that you check with the garage that serviced the car and spend time to find the right car.

I hope this helps.

Neal

Forgot to add MY98 38k miles. piston slap sorted at 20k miles

I have a MY98 UK, the previous owner never had any trouble and neither have I. You are not going to get it for certain!!
I am up to 48K now so I would have expected to see signs by now (am I right?). Would agree with the above, check the cars history and make up your own mind.

Does anyone know what happens if it doesn't get sorted out?

I think my engine does this, but not sure. My local (Cheam Motors) says there is nothing wrong with it.

Cheers
