HELP....loud squeeling noise from N/S front!!
If anyone can shed some light on this, I would be really appreciated!!
Car is a 2002 WRX with 53k miles.
It started with a slight squeak from the N/S front and has got REALLY loud!
I have checked the brakes, and all ok, tightened all nuts and bolts I can find.
It seems to make a noise as the wheel spin's, it speeds up with the speed of the car, have tried it with the engine off, in gear and out of gear, with the brakes pressed and de-pressed, it makes the same noise regardless.
When It started it was only when I turned to the right, but now it happens as soon as the wheels turn adn has increased in volume.
Can't see a split gaitor, any rubbing or any problems. It is quiet as soon as the car is in the air.
Sounds like it is coming from the hub area somewhere.
Can't feel any vibration or knocking when on the road or jacked up.
Help

Thanks for that but I don't think it's a bearing, my Astra GTE used to eat bearings and sounded quite deep "wuring" sounds.
This is higher pitched and sounds like a squeeling!
Any other ideas??
Cheers

I know It's a long shot but could you have picked up a small piece of gravel between the disc and guard ?
Had this twice before and the only way to clear it the second time was to remove the wheel before coaxing it out with a screw driver !

Thanks for the replies, but I have just put brand new disks and pads all round.
I have taken the callipers off and cleaned/copper greased and checked everything possible, nothing is rubbing, no stones/grit anywhere, cleaned the hub, back of the wheel, mounting surfaces of the disk etc... still no change.
Jacked both front wheels up last night and turned one whilst my Dad checked the noisey one and it sounds like it's coming from the gearbox end of the drive shaft!! I'm not clued up on gearboxes, all I know is that it could be a bearing. It is very quiet when theres no load on the wheels, so was a pain to pin point, but definately sounds like the gearbox end.
Tried the car up and down the road and the noise was still there.
I got a P1 gearbox fitted in January (due to wrx one breaking whilst driving over a speed hump at 2mph!!!) and the car has only done 2.5k miles since.
Taking it to Xtreme tomorrow to check it over, but am worried the bearing could sieze causing the wheel to lock up on the way there, it's about 35mile round trip.
Seems like everytime I get (or spend to get) the car working, within 2 weeks, it's back off the road!!!! It's really winding me up now, 3 years without any problems and the last 3 months of low loaders and banging my head on a brick wall
Thanks again for your suggestions

A defective wheel bearing makes a loud high pitched squeak. BTDT. Initially only audible when loading the bearing in turns, but as it gets worse the squeak is permanent.
In my car, the bearing had seized and destroyed the hub as well. I couldn't feel ANY play in the wheel when jacking up the car.
