Question TD04 turbo replacement

Hi, think my turbo, on a MY98 UK, needs replacement, smoky on start-up and a slight smell of burning oil on tickover.
Champions, Castleton technician could not find anyhting wrong but suggested it could be turbo oil seals?
Wondered what are my options/how much?

Refurb the turbo myself?
Replace with 2nd hand turbo (will any TD04 fit from any model year or do different MY's have different entries/fittings for oil/water etc.?)
Upgrade/exchange for TD04 hybrid?

Helllllpppp?

Thanks Neil

Not worth refurbing, theres loads of TD04's for sale for next to nowt.

Better still would be to upgrade, but you'll have to allow for extra costs like a remap etc

Question Compatability between model years for TD04?

Will any TD04 turbo fit from any model year Scoob, i.e. if I locate a turbo off a MY01 will it fit my MY98? i.e. it's likely to be newer/in better nick etc.
(See above)

Some of the old TD04's from older wagons have 90 degree entries, so won't fit yours, but there aren't many about.
Any TD04 from 97 onwards will definately fit.
