It has a VERY slight whine under-load, as soon as you touch the throttle at speeds in excess of 30mph is whines, the pitch seems to increase with road speed not engine speed.. Now I'm assuming this is going to be the gearbox as a buggered diff normally makes horrible noises when comming off the power.

The box needs to come off for a new clutch as the release bearing feels a bit knackered, is there any specific area I should look at when the box is out?

Even with the shot release bearing- gear changes feel smooth and precise, there is just an anoying whine, and its not the other half before anyone cracks that joke

I havent checked the oil level yet but I will tonight (75w90 I assume?? mmm treacle!)...

Yes, there is.

It's sort of in between the Turbo and Intercooler, it's not very noticable and does take some finding , but it's their !

Its still got a slight whine, is this normal on the Impreza? I've only driven off roaders with permenant 4WD and they tend to make a bit of a whining noise at high speed..
