Gearbox is easy, just undo drain plug and drain, likewise for the rear diff,

if i recall you need syntrax 3- 4 litres cost £10 a litre

Tip.... buy a narrow necked funnel youl need it for g/box

Well, personally, the dealers have done mine in the past ......... but now I am in the private maintenace era, and you can't buy what the Main Dealers use, I will be using this:-

http://www.commaoil.com/Product%20%2...X75W-90gl5.gif

It's £4:99 a Litre ................ I'll check that it is what Subaru recommend first, but I reckon it will be just fine!

don't forget you have the DCCD, some people don't recommend you put oils like syntrax in those boxes, i'll be changing the oil in box in the next few weeks too (DCCD too) and i've not found a definitive answer yet. more than likely going to be Redline lightweight shockproof.

on a side not, i've got that Comma stuff in mine at the moment, can't say i recommend it

I ran the same type of 75/90 Comma oil in my gearbox as Kev for about a week (1000 miles back then) before I changed it for Syntrax.

The gearbox felt dreadful with it in; the transmission was noisier, it was reluctant to change gear, I kept catching the syncros and, to cap it all, this all got worse as the gearbox warmed up! All these problems disappeared the moment I changed it for Syntrax

I'll be switching from Syntrax (can't seem to get it anywhere) to Millers CRX at the next change, which was very reasonably priced from AS Performance

BM stands for Black Moly DO NOT put this in a syncro gearbox, viscous LSD or ATB/Helical Differential! It's designed for use in Dog engagement gearboxes only!

75/90 is fine for regular use, I'm using 80/140 because of the use I put my car to (sprints, hillclimbs and drag, with a 2.5 based engine) but I had no problems with 75/90 when my car was running around the 350/310 mark with a stock UK 5 speed despite the abuse it got!

I use a new sealing washer on the gearbox drain plug and 11/2 turns of gas spec PTFE tape on the diff drain and fill plugs.

4 to 4.5 litres for a 6 speed gearbox
0.8 litres for an R160 differential
1 litre for an R180 differential

Newbie question...

Is the Front Diff part of the gearbox? I guess the same question for the DCCD too....

Yes, the front diff is inside the gearbox and the DCCD (and for that matter the viscous centre differential) is on bolted on to the end of the gearbox...

As Danny's pic here shows, the front diff is inside the main gearbox casting, on the right hand side:

Had a plated diff in my 97 RA, it started to make loads of noise when i crossed the line at a Pembrey Sprint a few years ago. Had it stripped and checked the Guy said it had run a bit dry at some time !!!. Possibly on a wild corner, I had filled it up to the filler level plug,( possibly .8 or less ) so now I put 1.0 Ltr in with a syringe with the nose down just to be safe. As yet nothing has blown out and the saels are OK

The same as a non DCCD box, as in a good quality 75w90
