Default Equal length headers

Thinking of getting my 04 wrx mapped, just wondered if i would benefit from equal length headers or would i loose driveability. Thinking of an APS system, Upgraded intercooler and turbo. The car must still be 100 % reliable.

cheers in advance

Equal length headers should give you more torque (apparently) but you will loose the burble noise.

The money your spending on all the bits wouldnt it be cheaper to sell the car and get an STi? At least you would keep your warranty then?

Yer would probally be an option but have a wagon for pracicality so not realy willing to change. Well not yet anyway.
Do you know if you loose out on top end power or do you benefit right through the rev range.

What do you want to achieve?

The headers will raise your boost threshold by a few hundred rpm but the torque increase will be significant right upto the redline, and matched with a suitably sized turbo you can expect to see some impressive gains. If it's only for road use keep your intercooler, fit some GT-Spec headers, £450 including uppipe, and a TD05 16g turbo (circa £300). Combine this with a remap and you'll have a very strong package.

be carefull which ones you buy as some cheaper once have been known to crack after very little milage (2k) mine have just blew after 15k

I would talk to the guy who will be remapping your car as he will know what he likes and doesn't

When I turned up for my remap the mapper told me he did no think equal length was as good

my only advice to you is if you require 100 % reliability buy a STI, my 3 year old wrx has had to turn in to my second car due to reliability and cost, still wouldn't swap it though

I am hoping to get around the 300hp mark with a nice response and not much lag, not to bothered about top speed as where i live is quite small and twisty. Just looking for a strong midrange i suppose.

With that in mind you've saved yourself a shed load of money!

Locate a front entry TD05 16g or a normal TD05 16g and get it converted to front entry for around £100.
Uprate your fuel pump to a Walbro for around £120
Port your headers for free! Or get a set from Harvey already done, not sure of pricing but I'm sure of you contact him he can let you know.
Fit and remap.

Where are you based?

harvey's headers are about £100 on an exchange basis I think also the WRX intercooler is a bit small for the TD05 and the STi item would be a better bet. Don't forget to get beter oil and plugs

LOL... have you seen the size of the standard intercooler the TD05 ran with on pre97 cars, the 04 WRX intercooler is huge in comparision. It will be absolutely fine at around the 300bhp mark you say you want to achieve.

Tony.

My sentiments exactly For road use you have to appreciate that boost is only sustained for a very short amount of time, obviously there would be benefits from using a new age STi intercooler but it's really not essential.

I still think fitting an Sti8 intercooler would be worthwhile IMHO, The STi TMIC has better flow and less pressure drop whch means the turbo is working less hard to flow the same amount of (cooler) air It's relatively cheap second hand and also a simple swap.

Also improves the unberbonnet eye candy....LOL

And leaves you maybe £300 lighter in the pocket for pretty negliable gain at 300bhp level. I'd be happy to run a UK MY97-00 intercooler for this level of tune.

If you have the cash spare tho....

Tony

I can't argue with that

I was running my Bugeye at 325 BHP plus with the STi TMIC...... I just thought that if any "future proofing" was needed then the bog standard STi TMIC would be a better bet than a FMIC or an aftermarket TMIC

AFAIK his e-mail is

harveysmith1@btopenworld.com

I'm not 100% sure what Harvey does but I have heard on the grapevine that he is very busy at the moment !!

100% bull**** free zone ported and wrapped my bugeye headers and they were a work of art all those twisted bits of wire must have taken ages AND they were sprayed with heat resistant water repellant . Class !!

hope this helps

Shaun
