Unhappy Blown up engine...

Hi there.

My mates just had his big end go on his 1999 UK Impreza. Just wondering if anyone can recomend anyone in particular to rebuild it? (I see API sponsor this forum - but never heard of them so don't know what they're like)

Also, what sort of price should he be looking at?

Thanks a lot.

Give David at API a call, very highly regarded on here. The cost depends on the damage done mate, but it will not be cheap I'm afraid. That said, it'll be significantly cheaper at API than if you went to a Subaru dealer.

Sorry to hear that bud, it just gut's ya !

Mine has just been finished by API, £2000 + vat for a full re-build.

For that you will get a stronger Crank bearings (Comp Spec) and a better/uprated oil pump, the crank is a weak point on these engines !

Give them a call and good luck

It's because of the flat four engine design.

David at API will tell you that nearly all the engines that give up have some
form of Crank failure.

In fact i think it's his best selling product !!!!

that is the biggest load of nonsense I have ever heard!

It is the big ends that go, some suspect it is due to crank oil supply, but a replacement crank won't help that, unless it is cross drilled, which again has never been proven to solve the problem.

The flat four design from a crank point of view is one of the subaru's biggest strong points. It is the reason you can geta 2.5 turbo engine to run 600+ lbft on the standard crank.

The distance between bores is small, and there are 5 main bearing journals for 4 cylinders. on top of that the crank is sandwiched veery strongly between two block halves, rather than a bolted down bearing cap.

agree with adam

i think you will find david will say crank bearing (in particular big end)failure for which the reasons are many and varied, some wierd, some wonderful, some true, some probably not!

Similar response to what i would have given had Adam not beaten me to it.

The reason he may sell a lot of cranks, is that if the bearings go, they will most likely score the crank to a point that it would need machine work. However, its just as economical to use a new crank in this scenario.
