Interesting. I spoke to my local dealer a couple of months ago and was told 5w 30 semi synthetic was what they used at the time.

Thats on a 03 STi.

Interesting. I'm sure my Scoob manual recommends 5w-30 so I bought Catrol GTX Magnatec 5xw-30. Seems ok but a little sluggish at times but as I've only just bought it it's hard to gauge whether it's because I've filled her up with this oil.

If its a newish one (i.e not a classic) it will say 5w-30

In the end of the day, if nobody is sure...use whatever it recommends in the owners manual - it's much more reliable and accurate than a BBS

After a lot of thought having looked at the hundreds of threads on oil, I finally opted for Silkolene ProS 5W40 Fully Synthetic - which I got for a reasonable price direct from a supplier depot near Redruth. The official Subaru owners manual recommends 5W30 for a MY01 WRX.

1st I've heard of oil grade effecting turbo spool-up and I very much doubt it does.

believe me it does, its seems obvious to me e.g if you put 20/40 in your car its far to thick ,thus slower the cycle of you cars engine.pop into a vauxhall dealership they have a gadget on the desk of there parts department which shows the difference between there oils they sell.it will show three tubes with a ballbearing in all of them. turn the tubes upside and it will show the 15/50 taking the longest to reach the bottom and the 5/30 the quickest.hope you understand.thats why race engines use 0/30 then rebuild them every race.

I cannot believe that oil affects turbo spool, sorry, let me just check the calendar.
you might have done well to call respected tuning and service shops and ask what they use in their own cars, usually a give away

personally it been motul 300v 15w50 for about 18 months now.
I had been concerned about the cold starts in the depths of winter but never seen a negative temp yet so wont change just yet.
there was some experimenting on 22b (Tone?) between 15w50 and 10w40 as a few of us have noticed a little background noise on the engines (as in knock display on a commander, not the engines a little louder to hear), but I havent seen the results yet and can never be arsed to change brands as it suits my needs to a tee.

turbo spins at what? up to 120,000 rpm at full chat?
and your telling me that using 15w50 slows this down a bit, noticeably in fact.

Engine works at what? say 8.2k rpm maximum for an sti?

if a unit weighing next to nothing spinning at 15 x engine speed cant "cut" through thick oil then jeeeez, I'd hate to think how much effect its having slowing down my engine, maybe with 10w40 I can get round the rev range a lot quicker and have no need to do any more mods.

ok if you put THICK OIL in your car engine will it go faster ?
will your turbo spool quicker in thicker oil ?
go back to school

if i did not notice the change i would not of mentioned it.
all the ifs and i dont think so
ive tried it.

infact put some 15/40 and see if there is a difference onder2:

turbo lag is crudely/roughly the time it takes to fill the pipework and intercooler with air before it reaches the engine, in a roundabout sort of way isnt it?
ie not based on oil whatsoever

SO DOES THE TURBO NOT WORK WITH THE ENGINE THEN ?WHICH HAS MECHANICAL MOVING PARTS WHICH ARE SURRONDED IN OIL.
