Question Wrapping, Securing, spraying headers & up-pipe

Okay in order to sort my headers and up-pipe out:

a) how much wrap will I need?
b) will I need to spray coat them after?
c) what size & how many ties will I need

d) where did all you lot get it from for a reasonable price? Looks like it is about £50 for 2" x 50' wrap!!

a) Depends on C so read my answer to that first but based on that standard headers will require about 1 roll, tubular headers 2 to 3
b) No, but it helps to seal the wrap and make it last longer
c) If your wrapping standard headers you can use 2" wide and 50' Tubualr headers are more convoluted and using 1" wide will allow you to do a better job...of course you could use one of each, using 1" on the twisty bits and 2" on the straights...Buy yourself a roll of stainless steel lock wire it's cheaper that way.
d) Demon Tweeks, Rally Design...I've always used the 'Cool It Thermo Tech' range...it's a bit of a pig to work with (needs to be damped down...not wet, damp) but it lasts very well, I wrapped my original SS downpipe with it 5 years ago and it's still holding up!

Done about 5 gruppe s headers now, and always managed to wrap the headers with 1 roll of 2" x 50'.

Then you need a little extra for the up pipe.

Allways use lockwire.

stainless wraps for the ends, lockwire at intervals down the pipe (too expensive to do it all in wraps and you cant get them as tight as lockwire)

i used 1 1/2 rolls but did the downpipe too. just spray it with VHT paint from your local motor factors.

Wrapped my downpipe recently. To tie off the wrap I bought some stainless steel cable ties from RS Comonents (about £15 for a bag of about 50).

VERY VERY good! Have held everything perfectly. The spec on them is very high (high temp range)

You could try them!

All the best

Dave.

Ordered some wrap this evening....£35 for 2" x 50' As it says on the website..."why pay more" Think that will all go on the headers as there's no way i'm taking my downpipe off again

http://www.thermallogic.co.uk/

Just got to find some ties now Is it deffo worth doing the spray?

I find starting at one end and finishing at the other works best.

I worked towards the uppipe from the opposite end. Alot easier to get the headers off with the turbo/downpipe removed. Might as well do it too while it's off.

Unless you're leaving the up-pipe in situ, you'll need to remove the downpipe to do the headers....

Sorry.....

Ah well that's inexperience for you Never done the headers b4. Might just wrap, tie & spray them and then get someone else to change them

I'm feeling lazy

soak the wrap first in warm water, make sure that you pull it nice and tight, for ease use plastic ties and then use stainless lockwire I found that I couldn't get the snap straps tight enough.(then remove the plastic ties)

This is the finished item attached to the engine prior to being fitted.

If you need anymore advice Matt give me a call
