Default Transfer Box and diffs

In a previous thread, Harvey wrote "UK cars are generally 3.9 front, 1.1:1 transfer box and 3.545 rear diff.
Generally, JDM/Australian cars are either 4.44 or 4.11 front and rear diffs with a 1.0:1 transfer box.
STi 5/6 is 4.44. The Classic WRX can be 4.11 or 4.44 depending on model or year". My question is this:
What is gained by useing a different ratio front and rear diff then correcting it with a 1:1.1 transfer? Why not just use front and rears with the same ratio and a 1:1 transfer? Surely a transfer box that isnt 1:1 will induce drag and powerloss?

basically the European cars are set up with inherent understeer...............not sure why we can't tolerate a little rear endiness???

so does a different front/rear diff ratio equalled out by the centre create the front/rear power split distribution?
