Is it just when the car is cold, does the knocking increase in frequency with engine speed, what model year is the car?

More details needed mate.

Unfortunately the big end is a possibility, but its not the only one- there may be other less drastic causes. How many miles does it have on the clock, what oil and petrol have you been using? Was it driven particularly hard prior to the noise starting?

Talk to someone like David at API www.apiengines.com for an expert opinion

Best wishes,

What is good oil? Are we talking Motul or Silkolene Pro S here? (that's the really good stuff) Most importantly, what grade are you using?

Best,

can`t feel any leads loose will have to check plugs tomorrow thanks do you think a loose plug would cause it to stall coming up to junction ? this happened yesterday before the noise started .

does it get louder and quieter with varying load (not necessarily varying revs) -this would indicate probable big end failure. fingers crossed that it's not mate...
