For a while now I have been hearing a clunking noise coming from the font end, usually on full lock but after a recent airfield day it would do it on even slight right hand lock but went away again.

Suspecting the CV joint after helpful input from here I took it all apart with my dad last weekend. Got drive shaft out and played with it on the bench and couldnt see or feel anything obviuosly wrong. Took off the CV joint and inspected the internals, still nothing obvious.

Inpected hub and saw some small bits of metal near the oil seal, seal turned out to be buggered so needed replacing but wheel bearing just wouldnt pop out. Gentle whacks with a hammer still wouldnt release it so more not so gentle whacks followed, still no joy. One SLEDGEHAMMER (!!) and a few whacks later out it popped revealing the mangled contnents of a wheel bearing. I had been running with it in this state for a good 9 months!!!

It has done some damage to the hub axle (is that wht you call it?) which is pictured below. A trip to Mill auto and £32 later, cleaned everything up and reassembled. Job done, well until I find a new hub axle to replace it with. Think that I might check the other side next weekend.

It might of been cheaper to take the hub and bearing to a garage and get them to remove and fit the bearing with the right tools. I did the same years ago on an old car, trying to save money. When done with the correct equipment it takes no time at all.

What are you on about? It didnt cost me anything apart from £32 for the wheel bearing. If I had taken it to a garage (why?) to do the work that I could do then it would have incoured a labour charge. I dont charge myself for labour and neither does my dad (well I havent recieved the bill yet! lol).

The old wheel bearing being buggered and the damage it caused to the hub axle had nothing to do with me, it was already there. I am confused at your post.

'Wheel Drive Flange' is what I would call it.
I'd keep that bearing as a trophy, never seen one 'done' so well. you must have been trying hard on the airfield!
