Angry Drive Shaft Problems

Had a loud ticking noise from the front of the car when turning ,so took it into the garage. they said it was the outer CV joint .they replaced the N/S outer CV joint, went for test drive to find the noise still there .so then replaced the O/S outer CV joint. on test drive the car was fine , but after 2 days the noise has reappeared?

can you tell the inner cv has gone rather than the outer ?
should this have been diagnosed at the time?
it was very warm to the touch

if its an inner joint you will get a lot of play at 90deg to the shaft.................can be difficult at first, but if its clicking should be obvious.............

could be a wheel bearing. I took out my drive shaft and took it all apart to find nothing wrong but close inpection of the hub revealed that lots of little bits of metal meaning buggered wheel bearing. £32 and a couple hours later, sorted. Did a fair bit of damage to the wheel bearing shaft tho so need a new one at somepoint.

Might sound silly, but check that your brake pad wear indicators are not catching the disk. Had this on my MY99 (same symptoms as you), and just cleaning off the corrosion from the inside of the disk stopped it doing it.

Dave.

new pads 6 weeks ago and they changed the brake fluid and removed the pads to de-glaze them , everything fine

Garage have proposed removing 2 new cv joints , fitting 2 brand new complete driveshafts with no labour charge , they will also detuct the price of the cv joints from the new driveshafts cost. no price on driveshafts yet.

From memory , i think i paid £160 for a pair, & i never bother just replacing an outer or an Inner, especilly on a performance car, As when you think about it , they have all had the same abuse & covered the same miles , Kill the job once & for all by doing as you are ,...

yeah i agree ,and so does the garage now too!
got back with 2 new driveshaft fitted , noise gone
no new labour charge , and they deducted the cost of the outer cv joint from the driveshaft costs.
still cost me £291 +vat for 2 reconditioned shafts !!
they said they will only replace full shafts on scoobs now ( said only seen 1 inner cv joint go before)

what happened to yours micky?
stockcar , do you find using recond shafts/cv joints there are problems?
or do you use new oem parts? maybe im just really unlucky.

update broke again
went up the nw at weekend ,drove past the turn off , so u-turned to hear the same dreaded noise again
only coming from one side . Went back to garage ..........................after discusions with supplier , 2 new(reconed) shafts will again be fitted ,no charge ,but another morning lost
next week.....
got the 2nd set of new driveshafts fitted ,again no charge , all seemed well......for a week same tick tick tick noise is back on the drivers front.Took car back to garage where they found the drivers side inner cv joint boot had came off emptying all the grease! the inner cv jiont very hot to the touch as well as the gearbox!
the garage had long discussion with company who supplied the reconditioned drive shafts , and they are now going to replace them with 2 brand new Subaru (oem part) driveshafts , again at no cost to myself!(apart from time lost). The garage is taking the hit for the labour.
It's but been a pain in the @rse, but cannot fault the garage for there customer service .
should be done by thursday , hope thats it ....please!

sorry, to clarify i meant it was most likely a "quality" issue with whoever has 'recond' the shafts.......................

assuming you haven't got another issue, bent arm, wheel bearing, etc.
