Unhappy Knackered Gearbox :( MY99

Hi ive just driven back home and the Gearbox has broke

It has been making a rattling noise in 3rd for about 2 days, i pulled off and gave it some stick in 2nd.. moved to 3rd again put foot down.... revs went off scale and grinding noise.... it continued along road for another 1/2 Mile or so i could still move gears etc and all but 3rd worked..

then i could not move out of 2nd... recovery got it out of gear and it moves between gears 3-4-5 but you cant select 1st or 2nd... its been towed away and will be taken to Subaru Garage in the morning.

Never had anything go wrong with car and always serviced at main dealer.

what do you recon the cost of this is going to be? and is subaru the best place to go or is it twice as much there?!

any help appriciated... gutted, car has given me so much pleasure, plus i cant get to work now

Cheers

Leon

Where abouts are they? i live in Stafford / Staffordshire are they miles away?

Its in the Subaru garage now, luckily im on good terms with them, they always give me some disount on parts etc.. however after speaking its all Labour charges mostly.. he said about £350 labour min to strip down and rebuild, he said it may be just a pin or something come out, if its shredded gears then it gets expensive... may need to take apart further, get bearings pressed out etc..

He suggested i look on net for a second hand box just in case, they dont start work till next week so can still go elsewhere...

any ideas where i could get one? with at least some gurantee?

Cheers

Thumbs up

Found this advert mate - might get you out of trouble very cheaply?

"""Gearbox for a 2000 Impreza Turbo.

Subaru took it apart thinking there was a problem when all along the problem was with the external linkage!

By the time they had realised they had put a new one in.

It was only out of suspicion we asked to see the old one and caught them!

Only had done 29,000 miles and it is in three parts. As the gearbox is in the three sections you can clearly see it''s an unabused box with all the gears as new.

All it needs is putting back together.

£90

Chelmsford

Tel:- 01245323024"""

I don't know anything about the item, just saw it and thought it may help you?

Talking Excellent...

That is brilliant, Il give them a ring tommorow and have a chat to them, might be worth getting that just incase... They are not opening it up till mon/tue but i fear the worst so as you say that may save me Loads . what a great response ive had, i used to be a member a while back but lost my details, everyone was always helpful but i never had a serious issue like this one!

thanks again il keep you posted...

P.S do you think its worth replacing the clutch while everything is out... Ive had the car from about 12months old and ive covered 78K now, just thinking while its all out id only have to pay for parts..? rather than in 6 / 12 months having the clutch go on me!

If you described it as you did in your 1st post, then they should have know its shredded 3rd gear. Exactly what my 1st thoughts were when ready it. The crap it chucked around the box, will have caused 1/2 to become difficult to select.

This happened to me 2 years ago, and i carried on driving as i need to be somewhere. 130miles later, all i had was 2nd, 4th and reverse.

Tell the garage not to touch it anymore, you will have it collected and send it to David at API, he may well have one already built up, so will just exchange a built box for the knackered box.

Alternatively search on here for a 2nd hand box, for circa £500, but that wont come with a warranty, which i think API do.

http://www.apiengines.com/index3.php

Where abouts in the country are they? Leamington Spa / Warwick area? (judging from phone number)

cheers

Leon

P.S most people i spoke to seem to recommend changing the clutch while its all out.. Subaru recon £350ish for part! i noticed on Scoobymania you cant get an AP clutch for that... any thoughts on this?

Two of my mate have damaged their gearboxes now, with metal in the oil!!! Very expensive Sounds like you have shagged third gear

2 options really.... Source a second hand unit off here, as I did for one of them and bought P20SPD that was new from Subaru before he went down the six speed route so had a few miles on it, but proved to be a good box. Most people on here are really honest, fortunately.

2nd option is a rebuilt gearbox with stronger internals (along with a lighened flywheel, etc) that cost mate number two £2800, which is very expensive. Car was sold last week for £3500, so you need to weigh up what you plan to do with the car in the future mate.

Hope this helps, Phill

Post Costs

Right... they had stripped it when i rang.. and say i would need the following parts..

3rd and 4th set = £244
Bulking ring = £14.88
syncro set = £103.20
Gear Transfer Driven = £71.01
Locking nut = £5.33
Locking Washer = £3
Central Diff = £414.70
Gaskets x 2 =
Oil = £20
Labour = £300

Shaft transmission main = £192?

Total inc vat = £1600ish

The shaft transmission he said he doesnt think they need (checking at mo) and the Central Diff is a recommendation as Swarf could have contaminated it...?

dont know if i should get the central diff... he said they can flush it but its sealed so you never know if swarf has contaminated it...

so looking at about £1380 if no shaft transmission main... do i risk it and save another £500 by not having the centre diff..

anyone got any comments on above?

No ive prob decided... waiting for API to get back with price, still needs fitting / delivering so its £1000 all in. Subaru still to fit the box as they have taken the other out. Just worried that a recon box may have problems but then again so could mine, if i dont need that Shaft transmission main at over £200 it brings cost down to about £1380..... still £400 more i suppose...

talking myself into it! the only other option is the 2 second hand boxs ive been offered at about £100 each, weather to use one and utalise parts for mine.

what a nightmare... i could of bought a 42" Plasma for that money! going to be skint for a long time

Leon: The dealer is having you over mate. A second hand box is probably around £500 or less for your M/Y. A gearbox specialist doing Subarus can do a rebuilt box that will have warranty for a little bit more.
David at API Engines,Harbury, South of Coventry in Warwickshire is such a specialist.
You have asked for advice. We are all giving you the same sound advice. Follow it unless you don't mind having your trousers down.
BTW, around here, a box out and a box in is half a days easy work and costs around £120 plus vat plus oil.
Many dealers do not carry out gearbox repairs on their own premises.
David has a truck to collect disabled cars. The dealers price is OTT and their man is off work ill. (In the past this has been a euphemism for "We need to send it out to somebody else")
Good luck.
PS Someone honest and reliable will tell you if you need a new clutch just by looking at it. On a standard car a new clutch is NOT a lot of money, especially if it is done early and only the friction plate is replaced.

PS The centre viscuous will probably be OK and that would be obvious to a gearbox builder when he took the box apart. Sound like the dealer is having a right laugh.

Harvey has just covered everything I was about to suggest.

He was always going to beat me to it though, he clearly has insomnia - 04:15

Question API

Hi I noticed the 4am reply! someone out there who stays up later than me!

I did eventually listen to everyone and last night rang API ! seemed really helpful and knowledgeable.

Just rang API again, David is not in today, however I gave them my Box number last night and they have just said they don't have one that will fit my car... They said the next shipment is in 2 weeks but they don't know what will be in it until it arrives... Cant believe it, thought I had an answer with the recon from API.

When I spoke to API Yesterday they said that as Subaru had taken my box out that they would suggest they put the new box back in because everyone does it differently, they would have delivered Box for about £40 on pallet.

If I don't have the Centre Diff the cost from Subaru to repair my box is about £900 all in. So at the moment that may be the only option? unless there is another good Subaru specialist.. (I will ring API tomorrow when David is back) The reason they said about diff is because when they took box apart there was a LOT of swarf in it and they feared contamination. As above the dealer said they will look at the clutch to see if it needs replacing and said I could just replace the plate.

thanks for the all the help and suggestions you all keep giving... its good to have a second opinion on stuff..

cheers

Leon
