Default Help gearbox question

Mine gearbox (6mt)is leaking at the back. I suspect it is the connection of the shaft and the gearbox.

But i have one problem i have to drive 20 miles to the nearest Subaru dealer. To solve this i want to fill the gearbox and drive for some miles and fill it again untill i reach the destination. But i am using redline heavy shockproof, and it is not a cheap oil. So I want to mix it with other oil, can i do that??
It is a waste to use the redline knows that will all over the road

Can anyone help me?

Regards Mike

how much oil are you leaking???
that's a fairly serious problem if you are going to need to top-up just to drive to the dealers.............................wouldn't recomend mixing the redline with anything else, defeats the object.....................

Have you checked the gearbox end cover bolts are not loose? - I had same symptoms - though a seal had blown and in the end this was all it was...

I haven't checked the bolts yet.
The oil is all over the exhaust accept the downpipe. So it has to be somewhere at the back

What is the best method to flush the redline out and change to another branch?

So it is the gearbox oil then.

It does go everywhere, and will apear to be a massive leak.

Possible places, sump plug (oil from front of box to back), prop shaft seal at back of box (very little on on the box), or transfer case bolts/seal (oil on back section of box)

I went to the local Subaru dealer today to find out the cause. What i suspected was correct the oil seal was blown out (god knows how?). We put a new one in and the problem is been solve.

Aslo change the oil. I do not want to use redline anymore, first it is very expensive and second i didn't notice any different.

But i am glad the leaking has been stopped

the point of something like redline or any other high quality oil is just that you don't notice any difference in general (although shift quality, ease, etc. can be improved)..................the biggest difference is the protection offered which far surpasses more std oils..................
hope this helps a bit.....

I heard that there is a spring between the back of the gearbox and the shaft. Is that true?
