Providing you port the headers properly you will get a noticable power improvement. Just ask Rich Wild or pole any of the numerous people who have had ported headers from me.
You will have to remove the heat shields which are usually in very poor condition and then you will have to cut off the cast lugs supporting the heat shields. This along with the porting is a dirty arduous job. Don`t forget that the uppipe also needs doing.
You will need a full roll, 50 feet of 2" DEI Exhaust Wrap along with suitable tie wire. I also use a special tool for twisting the tie wire.
I have never heard of wrapped OE headers cracking or any other problems associated with the wrapping and I think that it is another one of these myths that pervades scoobynet from time to time.

PS: I have three or four sets of OE headers here, one of which is in brand new condition, including heat shields from an STi 5 if anybody is looking for a set of OE headers. Alternatively I could port a set here and exchange for unported.
