Angry Rebuild time

Well thing haven't been going to great only owned my Sti V3 type-r a week and a half the first day had a little bump in it now the big ends have gone

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=388903

Right need to know a few things. I know i need the following

Water pump
oil pump
cambelt & tensioner
oil cooler
clean heads etc.....

This is something i'm unsure on though does the turbo need rebuilt due to the oil being contaminated?????

Have i missed anything.

I was planning on upgrading anyway in the future just not quiet this soon.

So would i be able to fit the following (see link below) on pretty much stock parts to start with then upgrade the Turbo,Fuelling, cooling etc etc...... ?? or what would be the essential parts that i would need for it to run safely??? or is it a case of just doing it all at once.

http://www.crawfordperformance.com/e..._package.shtml

P.S should of bought an EVO

IIRC on the V3 STi the pistons (on the standard short motor) come out of the block into the combustion chamber area on your heads. This gets you the correct compression ratio and correct squish area. Mating your heads to that short motor without work may not get the desired results.

What ECU are you running, if your going UP in displacement from 2.0 litre to 2.2 litre your new engine is going to consume more air and will thus need more fuel to achieve the correct AFR. You need some form of fuel adjustment device/ECU to set it up correctly. Apexi Power FC perhaps???

Why not take full advantage of a 'known' formula?
This is all based on what I've read, but I am following much the same route as you:

Your crank is duff and all that and you want to up-grade.
Get a new 2.5 block and transfer all the Sti v3 heads etc over.
Bolt-on:

TD 20g turbo............................................. .....£800
Apexi FC................................................ .........750
Flow headers (stock cast ones)....10
Walbro/550cc injectors/adjustable pressure reg.....£500
Full 3'' decat............................................. ........500
Other bits: pumps etc......................................£500

And:

Savings for a 6 speed box................................2000

Alternative is a rebuilt engine from API Engines..........£1000 ish

Frightening how the numbers add-up, but pleanty of choice.

Just food for thought, but the 2.5/Sti would be a great engine in the car!

To be honset don't really want to go down the EJ257 route. IMO they aren't quiet proven yet either. The price is really good value for money though.

Really got my heart set on the crawford r0 2.2. Just unsure if its best just upgrading everything while the engine is out or just get it up and running again with the bare essentials.

Going to have to write up a list to what is needed.

Do you have costs (landed) of the 2.2?
A year or so ago, lots of people 'did' 2.2's, it Toda etc, and now they seem to be non existant.
Others talk of '2.3's and so on.
Always wanted a 2.2 as it seems to be a snappy version of the 2.0L engine, but the cost is 2 x the 2.5 short engine from the States.

Anyway, good luck, hope you tell us of your decision and why.

The main reasons i'm going for it well hopefully soon anway. Prob wait till christmas is passed. I have still to find the landed price.

1. Factory closed deck block EJ22T
2. Its a fully built engine with forged internals etc..
3. Getting a fully built motor over here would cost a fortune.

I was tempted with the 2.5 myself. I actually bought one in the first group buy for the wrx i had at the time but sold it on. All the talk of gaskets going is making me paranoid. I never thoguht i was going to come back to impreza ownership as i was tempted buy the darkside. I wish i still had my 6 speed, 850cc injectors, lateral rad & ic etc......

I think the Toda ones were all stroked EJ20's. I'm reading Cords thread over on 22b.com with great interest.

Looking forward to see your hill climbing sti coming together.

It all starts on Boxing Day...
Always been a tradtition to 'do' the car over the hols in our household!
I presume the Dark Side is an EVO? There is a midnight dark EVO5 in my class, 460bhp and an awful lot more so got to try to take the fight to him next season.
Going to try to do a simple 'Project' mini thread on the job if I have the patience to mess with the pics etc.
2.5's are ok head gasket wise if you keep to 400x400?

Right started a littler shopping list. If i have missed anything or could impore anything please say.

Crawford RO 2.2 block
GT30R
Up-pipe & Downpipe
Headers
OS Giken/Exedy/HKS clutch????? it already has a uprated clutch of some sort but unsure what it is. Feels like a paddle clutch.
FMIC
740cc Injectors
Cords fuel rail
gaskets & lubricaints
Apexi FC
Apexi AVC--R
Induction kit
Cam belt & tensioner
Arp Botls or studs??????
Oil pump
water pump
Gauges AFR, Oil temp & pressure

Planning on just running it on the standard box for a while.

Car is a V3 STI TYPE-R

Suspension is all upgraded with Cusco coilovers comp 1's, anti roll bars, 4 point lower strut brace. solid drop links, Sti top strut brace.

Should this make a very reliable 400-500bhp car??

Except for the box if you 'go for it' though Andy F thinks the Sti boxes will tolerate 380/400bhp-330/350 lbft.
Please let me know how mush for the 2.2 if possible.

Will be a great car when done!

You'll also need a new donut oil cooler because your old one will more than likely be contaminated and they're a biatch to clean out

Highly recommend the Crawford Performance engines. Go with Quirt's gaskets.

You can also spec the engine to your required compression ratio if you wish.

Extra costs with regards to the short engine or the rest?

Duty will be likely £350 unless you get an invoice 'docked' so to speak. Somehow wrapping as gift isn't likely to work!

Shipping was $100 off top of my head.

ARP Head Studs were $100

Head gaskets were ~$100.

Yeah extra cost of the short motor. I think alot of extra cost will end up creeping into the whole build.

Don't you know it

Prices above were shipped to my door with the extras I wanted. There was a debate on the ARP head studs, I choose to use them.

Me too

Chris, I'd consider the R1 with the 2.5 stroke crank, lots more torque for not much more money

Andy, is this what you had? Have they bored it more to get it to 2.4 or are they rounding up 2.36 or similar?

It's 22b bore and 2.5 Sti stroke giving 2.33 from memory.

Right need a little help here. Theres a group buy going for GT Gen II headers but come with the up-pipe which i don't really need. Is it possible to just cut the flange off the up-pipe and just weld the garrett one at the right angle also getting a flange for the external gate welded on???? I'm unsure if the up-pipe for the rotated turbo's are slighly longer.

Maybe it would easier to lob the up-pipe away and get one made from scratch??

Chris - Preston at Gruppe-S is doing a GT30R kit with uppipe, downpipe, GT30R, oil lines, induction kit, connectors, External Wastegate (38mm AFAIK) for $2250.

Might be time to get in on that GB. Call me if you want details - 07792 067728

I was hoping the Gruppe-s kit fitted RHD but it doesn't. What a great price aswell

What power you going for?

I'm assuming the Gruppe S kit simply doesn't fit due to the downpipe?

I never got a complete answer to why it wouldn't fit. I think there maybe a few reason why it doesn't. Angle it sits at, up-pipe/downpipe due to all the stuff we have at that side of the car.

I will be happy with a solid 400-500bhp.

Just give Matthew a ring on 07976 261518, he will be able to supply you with the rotated up-pipe, downpipe combo to suit the Gruppe-S turbo in RHD format
