Please clear this up, no follower looks like a staple!

Are they round cylindrical followers? Or pivoting lever ones?

Early sti engines do not have lever type followers, they are found on the single cam (per head) 16v engines and the 4 cam Legacy engines.

If you do have lever style followers, then you probably have a Legacy engine, and if its tappety it's not the followers but the lash adjusters on which they pivot that are at fault. It's a common fault on Legacy engines, and running a high quality 10/40w oil sometimes helps. 15/50 can be too thick sometimes to really get to the lash adjuster properly and keep it pumped up.

If you want cylindrical followers that sit over the valve, they are called "bucket" followers as they are like an upturned bucket then you can get them with the shims under or on top, hence "under bucket" and "over bucket".

God knows after that....

I'm sure they are the cylinderical type but need to check on the under / over set up.

I knew it wouldn't be simple.....

If there is anything remotely round that sits directly on the valve and under hte cam, it's an impreza head.

You can get new hydraulic followers, which is easy, or you can fit solid ones.

If it is an Sti head, they should be solid already, with a small shim 10mm in diamter that goes over the top of the valve stem.
