Replacing pistons... questions
I want to replace the pistons in my STI 5 this week.
Where is the best place to buy these - I'd like delivery asap.
Also, will we need to remove the engine to replace these or can we just remove sump and heads to do it?
What other gaskets etc will I need to replace at the same time?
Any other advice or an estimate as to the time it will take?
Thanks
Ben

You could probably do it in situ, if it is a front piston.
However, it is SERIOUSLY not worth doing with the engine in the car!! muchus hassle!!
Like 4hrs plus extra hassle. ideally needs to be done on an engine stand but that is for ease rather than a nessecity.
Rear piston gudgeon pin access holes are in the bell housing so not available with engine in situ,i would also take into account that the bore may be damaged so it wont nessecarily be going back together in a day (if you hire a hoist for example) you also need to check head condition, valve seats etc as the missing metal from the piston wil have most likely gone out that way.
I have sent you another mail btw, have had no reply from you so i am not sure you are getting them. Rob@tweenierob.co.uk is best.

Forgot to add, you will need inlet and exh gaskets/head gasket/ water pump gasket (if no.4 piston/cam seals, gasket sealant, suabru 3 bond or good engine sealant for sump.
Allow yourself the whole day if you have not done it before, thsi will give you plenty of time as it is deffo not a rush job, everything must be clean.
Just read properly, if you are replacing all 4 pistons make sure they are original subaru ones including rings, imho there is no such thing as a drop in piston so forged copy items will require a hone or poss rebore of cylinders to make sure they match teh cylinders.
